Cakes…Our Vow to You
Something about this absurdist window signage is so beautiful we want to name a band after it: Cakes…Our Vow to You. It’s myterious, earnest and incorporates the word cake. It’s perfect. We don’t know what the Golden Wheat Bakery means by it ( Do they make wedding cakes? Do they promise to always have cakes on premises? Do they vow to make one if you know the secret password and scrawl it on a piece of paper which you crumple and hand to the cashier while patting your head and hopping on one foot?), but we love it.
We also love the Golden Wheat itself, for its inexpensive and delicious fresh breads and treats. Truth be told, we tend to avoid the donuts. They’re the bloated, huge kind that most of the Portuguese bakeries tend to offer. And when it comes to donuts, less is more.
It’s their fresh breads that impress us. The corn bread mini-loafs and ciabiatti-like subway rolls are baked fresh daily, and ridiculously cheap. Three rolls for a dollar, and you’d be pressed to find a better bread for your buck on that strip of College. A recent trip to the Wheats of Golden left us with three rolls, a baguette and a loaf of corn bread for around three bucks. As for the cakes they’ve vowed to us, perhaps we’ll take ’em up on it. Someday.
