Goodbye Sweet Prince

fantino.jpgMore than 1,000 friends and family came out to support a departing Chief Fantino last night, bestowing him with honours and friendship bracelets. Okay, we lied about the friendship bracelets. But reading of the speeches tossed off by Fantino fans, TOist discovers not insight about the chief himself, but insight about Mel Lastman’s work ethic. To wit:

Former Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman said Fantino was a tireless fighter for the city, pointing to the chief’s appearance last Friday as city council debated the budget. “He was out there fighting for Toronto, trying to get more police on the streets. He was trying to keep Toronto safe. Who would do that their second-last day before leaving to fight so hard?” Lastman said.

We’re onto you Mel! No one expects me to work during my last year in office! But while former mini-mayors praise the chief, there are many who say Fantino’s legacy will be one marred by intolerance, and a predisposition to bother bathing ladies.
