A Drinkable Dessert for V-Day

2005_02_14starbucks.jpg“Rich and sophisticated.”
No, this is not the description of our Valentine’s Day date, rather it’s the description offered by Starbucks for its new Chantico Drinking Chocolate.
Incredulous as it may sound, Cupid has struck the heart of Torontoist with its latest chocolately concoction. Similar to the thick and rich hot chocolate that Spain is famous for, Starbucks (of all places) has created a sinfully delicious drink suitable for dessert following any romantic Valentine’s Day dinner. Good thing V-Day is only once a year, because as good as this drink is, it’s loaded with calories (390) and fat (21g), but not to worry, it’s balanced out by close to 30% of your daily requirements for calcium and iron.
For those hopeless romantics willing to make a further trek then their local Starbuck’s, try Soma in the Distillery District. If that name sounds familiar to you it should, because Soma’s is affiliated with those famous high-end restaurant guys, Oliver & Bonacini – famous for bringing Toronto the likes of Jump, Canoe, Biff’s and others. Here, Chef David Castellan is known for his artisan chocolates, including his Mayan Hot Chocolate infused with cinnamon, ginger, chili pepper, orange peel and Madagascar vanilla. This incredible hot chocolate can be served alone as an intense shot ($2.50), or try it with milk ($3.50) which dilutes the intensity but still reveals a strong ginger and chili finish following each sip. This drink is a true decadence.

President’s Choice has a delicious and delectable dark chocolate from France, loaded with an avalanche of almonds. Bar none, it’s the best dark chocolate deal in town (400g, $4). Happy Valentine’s Day from the chocolate lovers at Torontoist.
