Idle Television

2005_01_20idol.gifWhen Canadian society stumbles into an Abilene Paradox, we act contrary to what we actually want. By doing this, we defeat the very purposes of what we are trying to accomplish. It is a symptom of the inability to manage agreement – not the inability to manage conflict. An example of this is Canadian Idol. We all privately and individually agree about the revolting and degenerative nature of the Idol television series, and privately and individually agree it should be cancelled, but we fail to accurately communicate our desires and beliefs to one another publicly. Everyone hates Idol, but no one is vocal enough about it to actually remove it from our airwaves. This is a cycle of disability to manage agreement that will repeat itself if not dealt with accurately through communication – hence the upcoming second season. Canadian Idol has now released its audition schedule, where contestants can RSVP an audition slot. If the Canadian public speaks out against Idol now, we may have a chance to stop it before season three.
