Madeleines’ Madeleines
TOist has been meaning to trek up to ‘Madeleines, Cherry Pie and Ice Cream’ since the day it opened. It had been closed when we’d walked by, and we’d erroneously told ourselves it would be one of those places that served just one thing and did it brazenly well. And why not cherry pie? But Madeleines is so much more. People go there and do not even have the cherry pie, or the ice cream. Sometimes they just have a few of Madeleines’ madeleines – their variation of the deliciously buttery biscuit comes with a hint of lemon, and a very pleasing shape. Twinkies of a sort, for the Upper Annex set.
Madeleines has a handful of other delectables as well, from pecan pie to croissants. And a nice sign too.
What’s more, Madeleines proprietress Kyla Eaglesham could not guarantee that the baked goods on site were peanut-free, and so promised that she could make a nut-free pie for any allergy-sufferer who called and gave her three days to prepare. Our no-nut friend really appreciated this gesture. And we really appreciate a good baked good. Long live Madeleines.
