Curses!
This promo still looks like it should be from the latest Asia Argento movie (as if), or an Angelina Jolie party circa 1997, but guess what – it’s for the COC’s new production of Carmen, the one they’re hoping will banish the Curse! Apparently, the last production of Carmen, about a dozen years ago, was such a miserable affair it sent the company into debt, and got the artistic director fired. TOist bets that production did not have such a gothchic poster campaign either. Not that we mind. If sexing up the opera helps them sell those muy expensive tickets, then let the COC put go go girls on the Ring Cycle posters and call it the Swing Cycle.
We did a little research into the artist behind the photo. Valerie Simmons, a Montreal photog, teaches at the Saidye Bronfman, and also shot award-winning (and creepy) photos for the COC’s production of The Handmaid’s Tale.
