The Office Meets Sex in (sic) the City?
The Geminis toast media mediocrity, and last night was no exception. Torontoist despairs at the fact that a patently unfunny comedy is making CRTC waves, summoning TV execs across this great land out of Wellbutrin, and into a united cry of ‘it can be done!‘ But if the ‘it’ is well-intended, nationalistic, mediocrity, count us out.
Scene sufficiently set, our curiousity was aroused by a release for a new Canadian show that promises ‘The Office meets Sex in the City.’ A ballsy claim, dear PR copywriters, and it’s sex AND the city. You’re saying ‘The Jane Story’ is as good as the lovechild of two well-written, critically-praised, impressively-acted, religiously-watched programs. Consider our interest piqued.
The show stars Second City alum Teresa Pavlinek, as a 33 year-old singleton hazarding the world of dating. Apparently, she even tries out that newfangled thing called ‘speed dating.’ Global really is on the ball. The production exec in charge calls the show ‘Mary Tyler Moore for Gen Xers.’ Is that supposed to appeal.
Snarky asides aside, the show may be that rare piece of good Canadian telly. We’ll find out when it airs on the morrow.
