Prison Chic Goes Mainstream

2004_12_13tattoo.gifOnce a symbol of rebellion and non-conformity, tattoo art might now be a government-sanctioned activity for society’s most removed outcasts. In a move that would have Hal Niedzviecki shaking his head, Corrections Canada is considering a pilot project that would provide tattooing instruction and safe tools to prisoners in six institutions across the country. Mr Niedzviecki likes to think that things like tattoos are now so mainstream, they become the mark of conformity rather than the much cooler non-conformity. And when the MAN is giving out said tattoos, it becomes even less rebellious. But who ever said “non-conforming conformity” had to be dangerous? A safely administered tat is still a tat. You go Corrections Canada!
