The Burnt Marshmallows and The Rumoli Bros., two comic duos of Fringe festival fame, are teaming up for some seasonal hilarity called The Clodhopper® Christmas Comedy Hour. Tonight, tomorrow and next Thursday and Friday, too, these two funny gals and two funny guys will join together for an old-fashioned variety show at the Tim Sims Playhouse.
Yes, the comedy show is actually sponsored by Clodhoppers — those Winnipeg-originated fudge and graham cracker clusters that are sweeping the hemisphere — and everyone gets a free bag with the price of admission.
While some may see this as a further extension of invasive advertising and product placement, Torontoist prefers to see it as a throwback to the days of yore when radio performers were all called The Marlboro Light Company Players or some other such pre-branding branding. Also, we like free candy.
It’s fitting, in a way, since the Rumoli Bros. in particular are a throwback to double-acts of yore or, as their promo material puts it, “a contemporary comedy duo in the classic tradition of Rowan & Martin, the Smothers Brothers, and the Olsen Twins.” Fitting also, because the show is taking place in a theatre named after the actor who was best known for playing “circle researcher Rory Tate” in the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup TV commercials.
