Just Let Me Put My Face On!

2004_12_20brand.gifA broad-based coalition of Toronto city organizations has been running the Toronto branding project for the past seven weeks. So why does no one care? Well, for starters, the postering campaign looks like someone’s scrubbed it of any expression. Why so faceless? And why so homogenous looking? We are the multicultural city.
And what’s the project all about anyway? And why do we have city branding projects? Are they going to put us in a bottle and call us spring water?
Torontoist has so many questions about this ‘public engagement campaign‘ and so few answers. We do know that the city deploys ‘street team members’ to restaurants around town. These team members “sport their forest green fleeces and baseball caps branded www.wearetoronto.ca as they record Torontonians’ answers to this week’s question on their palmOne Treo 600, provided by Bell.” Great. City branding and corporate sponsorship.
Torontoist wishes these faceless joes had a little expression, and so, barring inciting everyone to deface urban signage, we’ll recommend a little imagination. Perhaps even a few comments on the site’s chatboards. This week’s query is ‘What would you do to enhance Toronto?’ Torontoist would buy it a giant heater, to prevent days such as this one from ever occurring.
