Friday Flickage: Indecision 2004!

2004_12_17flix.gifJust last week Torontoist was mourning the lack of truly watchable films, or at least films we could get certifiably excited about. Sure, we had our fill of filler films, those movies that pad the cinema space between the big openings, but where was the razzle, and by default, the dazzle?
Tonight, though, there are cinematic options aplenty. From Scorcese, (always an Oscar Bridesmaid, never a bride…until now?), and from two dynamite duets: Jeunet and Tautou, and Haines and Maddin. They sound like ice dancing pairs.
First, The Aviator. The reviews are running good to great. Cate is channeling Kate. And Hughes was a man of massive appetites, which bodes well for a little Xmas excess.
Then, there’s Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s heavily-anticipated Amelie follow-up, starring the dewiest button to button herself, Audrey Tautou. It’s a war pic, with whimsical overtones, nice cinematography and fart jokes. Hoy.
And finally, there’s Emily Haines, who is revered as some sort of andronynous empress of cool beauty, playing tonight without the rest of the band, but with the films of Guy Maddin. There are two shows, so you can catch a film at the theatre, before dashing to the later Haines show. At the Church of the Redeemer.
