Farewell, Susan Sontag

2004_12_29susansontag.jpgWriter, activist and provocateur Susan Sontag, 71, succumbed to leukemia yesterday in a New York City hospital.
Sontag was one of America’s best-loved and most admired writers. Her impressive ouevre includes the novel In America, the collection of essays Against Interpretation, and most recently, Regarding the Pain of Others.
Sontag raised the ire of conservative Americans during the aftermath of the Sept. 11 World Trade Centre attacks, when she encouraged Americans to look at reasons why the U.S. could be a target for terrorism rather than how the U.S. was a target for terrorism. She had since been among the strongest voices opposing the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Respect! (photo by Annie Leibovitz)
