Last week, Torontoist was criticized for the inclusion of an Ol’ Dirty Bastard song for the second time in the short run of our mixtape series. If this were a few years ago, Torontoist would have probably responded to the fairly legitimate beef by posting only ODB Mp3’s today. But that was us then. Now, we take a cue from the populist French leader Jacques Chirac and take a more diplomatic approach to the problem. This week le Mercredi Mixtape offers no ODB, but rather a wide range of music that should satisfy the most diverse tastes. Voila:
1. Tom Wolfe Interviewed by Rhett Miller
To coincide with the distinguished Mr Wolfe’s visit to Toronto, we offer this very mature interview of the author by Rhett Miller of the Old 97’s.
2. Spoon – Sister Jack
Unfinished from their forthcoming album. Around for 10+ years, Spoon is a big hit with the older crowd.
3. DJ/Rupture – Lonesome Side
Off Special Gunpowder, released earlier this year and still making rounds…
4. Aberfeldy – Vegetarian Restaurant
Neat acoustic jam from Teaching the Indie Kids to Dance Again.
5. The Amphetameanies – Last Night
Belle & Sebastian buddies stay faithful to the second wave of ska.
6. Brian Wilson – Heroes and Villains
By no means a new song – it was originally released last century. But thus far, has been conspicuously absent from best of lists in it’s re-release.
7. Magneta Lane – Cheap Linguistics
Offered exculsively by the legendary Carl Wilson of Zoilus. In the spirit of diplomacy, Torontoist thought twice before stealing the link from Mr Zoilus. Go here to listen to the future B-side of Paper Bag’s most recent success.
8. Man Man – Moustache
Interesting find on Pitchdork. Sounds like a found-sound waltz, with a noticably Waits nod.
9. Silent League – Breathe
Is this some sort of Human League reference? Or maybe The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? The first few bars sound like Snow Patrol doing Arcade Fire. Nice melodies, if you’re into that sort of thing.
And remember, you can please all of the people some of the time, some of the people all the time, but you can’t blah blah blah. Until next week!
