Bush and Army Deserter Cut From the Same WMD’s

2004_12_07hinzman.jpgWhen Jeremy Hinzman signed up for the United States Army, it seems it did not occur to him that may have to go to war.
Hinzman, 26, came to Toronto from the 82d Airborne Regiment in North Carolina after being deployed to Iraq. He served in Afghanistan as a military cook, but decided not to join the invasion of Iraq, calling it “unlawful.” Hinzman filed for “conscientious objector,” but the US government entirely disagreed with that point of view, and rejected him. Now Hinzman is one of three US soldiers known to be seeking refugee status in Canada, and facing jail time in his home country.
The Immigration and Refugee Board, however, puts the number of positive decisions for Americans refugee seekers as “very low,” since the US currently uses a volunteer army.
When asked why he joined in the first place, American objector said he wanted a university education. So, Hinzman, though against the invasion, has in effect mirrored the actions of his President; he has gone to war for the wrong reasons.
