Weekend Field Trip: Adventures at the Tabletop
Torontoist ambled over to OCAD’s Whodunit Mystery Art Sale on Sunday. But we got there too late. The show had been divested of most of its resources, and, well, what was left was left for a reason. But the idea itself was a neat one. It brought together local artists and students and invited them to create card-size artworks. The works were then sold off for seventy-five bucks a pop, the identity’s of the artists remaining a mystery all the while.
These secret sales go on all over the place, but the event got its start in Londontown, where the Royal College of Art has been holding secret sales for eleven years. Their sales mix student works with small wonders by David Hockey, Julian Opie and others. But a brief comparison of RCA’s cards, and OCAD’s reveals the quality of work is about even. Lots of really good stuff, less not so good stuff. Next year we’ll get there earlier.
