We’d Rather Have Dan
Daniel Irvin Rather has announced his impending retirement and the battle to succeed his very well remunerated seat at the CBS News anchor desk is likely already claiming lives and egos on West 57th down in New York. And while it may take some time for the blood to cake and dry and for once pristine haircuts to be un-ruffled, it’s entirely likely that one of Toronto’s very own, pretty boy John Roberts, will emerge the victor in the high-stakes Anchor Sweepstakes.
Local pride should reign supreme here, but Torontoist is still reeling from a chance encounter with Roberts during the melee that accompanied the FTAA summit in Quebec City some years ago. The White House Correspondent, positioned across “the fence” from Torontoist and garbed in a silly black Whistler-Blackcomb mock turtleneck, pronounced to all who would listen that Quebec City was “better than Seattle.”
“In what way? More sensational? More violent?” he was asked by an incredulous knot of student journalists. At which point a tear gas canister landed nearby and he dashed for cover, thereby avoiding the need to clarify.
