They’re Hardcore, Dig?

2004_11_01brianjonestown.jpgAfter a spike in popularity with the recent documentary Dig!, the Brian Jonestown Massacre could’ve really capitalized at their Oct. 31 show at Lee’s Palace. Instead, lead singer/evil genius Anton Newcombe and his Massacre tried to redefine the word “hardcore” with the sold-out Toronto concert. Newcombe and his five band mates charged a paltry $9 cover and didn’t sell one stitch of merchandise. No CD’s, no shirts, not even a button. It even looked like the band had to pay for their drinks, as Newcombe could be seen emptying his pockets for last call (probably wasn’t expecting the Canadian dollar to be at 82 cents!). The singer also took 10-15 minute breaks every so often to teach his band the songs and air his views on Canada’s purchase of nuclear subs from Britain. If that’s not hardcore…
