There’s a New Poet Sheriff in Town!
Canada named a new poet laureate today. She’s Francophone multi-disciplinary artist Pauline Michel, and, by the looks of it, she plans to give Mayor Miller a run for his well-coiffed money in the fight for the country’s most distinct hair. Michel, who hails from Asbetos, (yes, Asbestos) Quebec, receives $12,000 per year as Laureate, thus continuing to enforce the notion of poetry as a poor man’s slog. Still, it all seems like a step in the right direction (since the post was founded in 2001). Michel is a progressive poet, and a political artist keenly atune to Quebec politics. Indeed, Michel will bring interdisciplinary, and slighty kooky, work to the peoples of Canada. If only the wire story that every paper ran could have gotten her name right!
