Still our Vladdy

Youppi.jpgStill weeping silently about the imminent departure (for a Potomac view and a $450 million bribe) of Nos Amours from Montreal, we at Torontoist noted with some glum satisfaction that former Expo golden boy Vladimir Guerrero had taken the 2004 American League MVP award.
It’s a grim reflection on just how far to the margins of the baseball map Montreal had managed to drift (or be steered) over the past decade that one of the most complete players of his generation had been virtually ignored until he donned the haloed ‘A’ of the Anaheim Angels this spring. During the octet of years our Vladdy spent spearing liners under the failing arc lights of the Big Owe, we watched the man throw runners out at third from right field, actually hit gopher balls for stand-up doubles, and just generally smash the proverbial feculence out of every ball within his reach.
He rarely received any kudos for such feats outside of any Jack Todd columns, but today’s award means he’s hit the (American media) big-time.
