How do photo desks get pictures for stories like these? Most outlets front a picture of Dr. Sheela Basrur, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer, for the story on Ontario obesity escalation. In doing so, they avoid the mean task of taking a picture of a chubby Torontonian in a swimsuit. But CTV never shies away from an opportunity to get the goods (see borrowed pic). And a pub called Sci-Tech-Today goes the super obvious photo illustration route, with feet, a tape measure and a scale. What are they trying to tell us?
The story itself is more of the same, but worryingly so. About half of Ontario’s adults are considered overweight, and the kids are getting tubbier too. Basrur says we need to exercise, and has a whole slew of recommendations for thinning down the province. Most importantly, the province will probably be saying g’bye to trans-fats. But some believe the state has no business in the cupboards of the nation.
