Mad about Maddin, Less so York University

2004_10_26maddin.jpg Guy Maddin, the Peg’s master moviemaker, and the genius who came up with glass legs full of beer will be live from excrutiatingly far York University, on Thursday at 7 pm, as part of the Independents, a monthly film series on Independent Canadian film. U of T silent cinema scholar Charlie Keil will host, and Maddin will screen a handful of short films, like Sissy Boy Slap Party (2004) and Cowards Bend the Knee. Will Maddin turn out to be a pretentious twit, or the endearing Manitoban recluse we’d prefer to envision him as? The magic 8 ball points to the former, if rumours about the Director’s petulent verbosity on Saddest Music’s DVD hold up. But who believes a magic 8 ball? Torontoist will be PT Cruising up to furthest York come Thursday in the hopes of the latter, and with all the glee that black and white films with vasolined lenses can inspire in us.
More on Maddin here, and here.
