Hello! Although you probably didn’t notice, this Torontoist writer was away for a week, and as a result we failed to do something very important. Specifically, to congratulate Norm Wilner on becoming NOW’s senior film critic. We're not doing this just because we know Wilner keeps an eye on Torontoist to see if he gets a mention, but because we like his work so much that we can’t think of anyone better to step into John Harkness’s (non-literal) shoes.

Interesting and depressing news today in the Toronto Star, with the revelation that there are no plans to release the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theatres in Canada. Why is that, hmm? The article states (quite correctly) that it’s one of the most popular shows on The Detour on Teletoon (where you can watch it at 10:15 p.m. weeknights) so why they’re not giving it at least a limited release here confounds us.
There are several films out this week. As there are every week. But for some reason Torontoist just isn’t that interested in them this time. Oh, sure, we could riff on the new Will Ferrell vehicle, Stranger than Fiction, but we are… Disinterested, as we said. Thankfully the professionals aren’t so undisciplined, with Eye Weekly’s Jason Anderson praising the script as “clever and idiosyncratic”, and Barrett Hooper from Now calling it “genuinely funny and surprisingly touching.”
Oh man! We’re really disappointed here at Torontoist towers as it’s really far too late in the week to make any jokes about a crazy drunken Mel Gibson. I mean, what is there left to say? Still, we suppose, it’s only increased our frothing anticipation for Apocalypto, particularly the great reveal at the end where it turns out that all the evil priests, drenched in the blood of their gory, despicable (and numerous) human sacrifices are actually evil Jews.
Well, we’ve already mentioned the Australian Film Festival today, but, of course, there’s still space for our little round up of cinema’s new releases and indie and rep film for the week.
So Hollywood is worried. We're five weeks into the blockbuster season, and there's been nary a decent showing at the box office. Poor Orlando Bloom? Nope, poor audiences. Poor audiences paying good money for bad movies. Besides, if the poor, beleagured public decides to spend their leisure money elsewhere, maybe the studios will stop foisting crap upon us. Sadly, they couldn't work such a turn around in time for this weekend, where your BO offerings include both a crappy J Lo flick, and, for good measure, a crappy Will Ferrell flick.
. But all in all, both Melinda tales (the film is spliced into two stories - one comic, one tragic) are modestly amusing, as is the combined comedic force of Will Ferrell and Steve Carrell playing nerdy straight men in a Woody Allen caper.
