A Milton woman went on a rampage with a samurai sword on Sunday, injuring her boyfriend and an off-duty firefighter, smashing windows at a gas station and hacking at a parked car. While Torontoist doesn't condone senseless irrational violence, you've got to give her points for style. After a firestorm of criticism, the City has put the brakes on their controversial plan to sell land in Yorkville to McDonalds. The problem is that since there's......

Photo by luxsaber from Flickr. Loved by students, stoners, Torontoist's mum and artistically named deviant reptiles alike, pizza was inevitably going to grace at least one edition of the Great Torontoist Challenge. While Torontoist truly enjoys going for the sit-down shmancy pizza or the late-night slice, we decided that for this challenge we needed to explore one of the paradigmatic aspects of this flat-breaded delight—the delivery. With this, in our endeavor of keeping a......

Photo by Frank Yang/Chromewaves. Everyone seems to agree; V-Fest was (approximately) a gabillion times better this year than last year, with less last-minute cancellations, cantankerous islanders cutting short headliners’ sets (that, plus the noise bylaw), and a generally more buoyant mood to the whole affair. While Torontoist missed Day One due to familial obligations (everyone loves a wedding!), the less-sunny Day Two provided a lot more in big-name fun than its sunnier Saturday cousin.......

When the Information and Privacy Commissioner for Ontario published its guidelines for the use of video surveillance cameras in public places back in October 2001 [.PDF], it summarized that institutions considering their use "must balance the benefits of video surveillance to the public against an individual’s right to be free of unwarranted intrusion into his or her life. Pervasive, routine and random surveillance of ordinary, lawful public activities interferes with an individual’s privacy." As......

While Torontoist spent a lazy Sunday sheltered from the rain, 10,000 runners competed in the 42.2 km Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, raising nearly $250,000 for local charities. Although Daniel Rono clocked the fastest time at 2 hours and 10 minutes, the surprise fan favourite was Michal Kapral, 34, who set the new speed record for "joggling". Kapral set the world record for joggling (jogging + juggling = joggling) in Toronto last September, but was soon......

The big film this week is Terence Malik’s The New World, and by big, of course, we mean big (and by that we mean epic). Though, the full theatrical release does shed 15 minutes from it’s previous limited release for Oscar consideration. The majority of the publicity centres on 15 year old Q’Orianka Kilcher, who plays Pocahontas in the feature, because Terence Malik is a legendary recluse, and neither of the male stars (Colin......

While Torontoist was busy at the back of the uTOpia launch making marshmallow towers and Libeskind-inspired "crystals," great panellists were chatting about the city. The newly launched Rabble Book Lounge recorded one of the panels (Discussing Public Space with Darren O'Donnell, Dave Meslin, Heather MacLean and Adam Vaughan). You can get it here.......

While Torontoist is relieved that there will be no shortage of liquor this coming long weekend, we were secretly hoping that the potential limited access to hard liquor would somehow automatically result in a few prohibition-style speakeasies, replete with rollicking jazz riffs, Algonquin-worthy bon mots, and plenty of Charlestoning. Alas, we'll have to wait until Hallowe'en to trot out our kicky flapper dress and knee-lengh pearls.......

2. The Rosedale Ravine (photo circa 1907) While Torontoist may not have made out in the bleachers as a teen, we did have our fair share of outdoor intimate encounters. Things had to happen outside, though, because finding an empty room is hard when you're a sexually charged teen. Saturday nights were always challenges to find ideal places to get it on, and we're happy to report that times have not changed. Torontoist has become......

While Torontoist knows it's perfectly legal to go topless in Toronto, we have to face the fact that it's not always possible. However, if you are eager to show off your assets or check out the competition (no pun intended) head over to the COOP Gallery for Paige Gratland and Ginger Brooks Takahashi's Tit Pin Project. The show is based around 2 ½ inch buttons displaying various breasts, tits, and nipples; a throwback to a......

Amid renewed concerns of the efficiency of the LCBO, the provincial government has appointed some sort of panel in attempts to modernize the liquor board. While Torontoist didn't actually sit down with panel organizer Greg Sorbara, that didn't stop us from conducting a hard-hitting interview with the Finance Minister. Here's the exclusive: Torontoist: Hi Greg! Minister Sorbara: (no answer) Torontoist: So what's all this we hear about the LCBO? Minister Sorbara: [The current system of......

This is a bedbug. And while the monstrous little bloodsuckers may not be known to bear tiny little Toronto flags, they are apparently becoming increasingly common in this burgh. The spectre of bedbugs tends to evoke images of peeling wallpaper and unidentified carpet stains and seedy roadside motels called the Palace or the Shangri-La, and yet this association was the product of a relatively short period in the enduring human-insect inter-species scrimmage. Prior to the......

Grapefruit Moon, that Seaton Village hub of hashed browns and fair trade coffee, is getting the makeover treatment. Its windows will remain covered with a fetching black plastic while a show, rumoured to be called 'Restaurant Makeover,' gives the resto the wham-bam-resplastered-mam redux. While Torontoist wasn't gaga for the Moon's previous look, it was cozy, and seemed to suit the local establishment quite nicely. We'll be curious to see what those speedy and dextrous......
