A Milton woman went on a rampage with a samurai sword on Sunday, injuring her boyfriend and an off-duty firefighter, smashing windows at a gas station and hacking at a parked car. While Torontoist doesn't condone senseless irrational violence, you've got to give her points for style.

When the Information and Privacy Commissioner for Ontario published its guidelines for the use of video surveillance cameras in public places back in October 2001 [.PDF], it summarized that institutions considering their use "must balance the benefits of video surveillance to the public against an individual’s right to be free of unwarranted intrusion into his or her life. Pervasive, routine and random surveillance of ordinary, lawful public activities interferes with an individual’s privacy."
While Torontoist spent a lazy Sunday sheltered from the rain, 10,000 runners competed in the 42.2 km Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, raising nearly $250,000 for local charities.
The big film this week is Terence Malik’s The New World, and by big, of course, we mean big (and by that we mean epic). Though, the full theatrical release does shed 15 minutes from it’s previous limited release for Oscar consideration. The majority of the publicity centres on 15 year old Q’Orianka Kilcher, who plays Pocahontas in the feature, because Terence Malik is a legendary recluse, and neither of the male stars (Colin Farrell nor Christian Bale) are quite as interesting to the media as a young, female film star on the wrong side of the age of consent. Now’s Josh Harkness comments “this is as beautiful as anything you’ll see in theatres this year, and if you appreciate cinematography, the big screen is the way to go” but is less convinced of the film’s overall quality. Hometown boy Christopher Plummer stars as Captain Christopher Newport.
While Torontoist was busy at the back of the uTOpia launch making marshmallow towers and Libeskind-inspired "crystals," great panellists were chatting about the city. The newly launched Rabble Book Lounge recorded one of the panels (Discussing Public Space with Darren O'Donnell, Dave Meslin, Heather MacLean and Adam Vaughan). You can get it here.
While Torontoist is relieved that there will be no shortage of liquor this coming long weekend, we were secretly hoping that the potential limited access to hard liquor would somehow automatically result in a few prohibition-style speakeasies, replete with rollicking jazz riffs, Algonquin-worthy bon mots, and plenty of Charlestoning. Alas, we'll have to wait until Hallowe'en to trot out our kicky flapper dress and knee-lengh pearls.
While Torontoist may not have made out in the bleachers as a teen, we did have our fair share of outdoor intimate encounters. Things to happen outside, though, because finding an empty room is hard when you're a sexually charged teen. Saturday nights were always challenges to find ideal places to get it on, and we're happy to report that times have not changed.
ion (no pun intended) head over to the COOP Gallery for Paige Gratland and Ginger Brooks Takahashi's Tit Pin Project.
Amid renewed concerns of the efficiency of the LCBO, the provincial government has appointed some sort of panel in attempts to modernize the liquor board. While Torontoist didn't actually sit down with panel organizer Greg Sorbara, that didn't stop us from conducting a hard-hitting interview with the Finance Minister. Here's the exclusive:
This is a bedbug.
Grapefruit Moon, that Seaton Village hub of hashed browns and fair trade coffee, is getting the makeover treatment. Its windows will remain covered with a fetching black plastic while a show, rumoured to be called 'Restaurant Makeover,' gives the resto the wham-bam-resplastered-mam redux. While Torontoist wasn't gaga for the Moon's previous look, it was cozy, and seemed to suit the local establishment quite nicely. We'll be curious to see what those speedy and dextrous designer hands will bring forth in a few week's time. In the interim, SLT (seitan, lettuce and tomato) fans will have to go elsewhere to have their brunch needs met.
