For Toronto's Kids On TV, it's been a long road to get their debut album completed, one that has lasted the better part of three years. For those waiting to hear Mixing Business With Pleasure, released last week by the Blocks Recording Club, there has been the lingering question of how the music would translate from the live show onto tape. For a band that is so infamous for its high-energy, explicit performances, how would the music hold up on its own? Very well, it turns out.
Mayor Boom Boom may have a tough time stemming the flow of guns and revitalizing the waterfront during the short life of his mandate but the one problem he could conceivably tackle, if not solve, is the trashiest of them all. As folks from Ottawa to Napanee to Michigan ('We Don't Want to be Canada's Trash Can") angrily tell the big guy to keep his garbage on site, where is Mayor Dave's plan? Leaving Republic Waste Management to find dumping grounds if any of the States close their borders to trash seems shortsighted at best. This morning City officials told the CBC that our trash crisis is something that may take ten years to figure out. "Torontonians aren't proud of it, but we have a right to do it," said the Mayor. Nafta-given right or no, the Mayor should be putting in place strategies to solve the trash crisis, ten years or a dozen in the working, rather than defending to the death our right to dump.
Though hot hot Toronto didn't net that sidebar Spin Magazine contemplated devoting to our burgeoning 'scene,' we still exist. Testament to our existence, and the swirling events of the city that cater to said existence, are lots of new websites devoted to talking about Toronto, all things Toronto. One such new kid on the block is BlogTO, which looks like it's shaping up to have a nice mix of this, that, and, of course, the other. NOW writers Catharine Farquharson and Deirdre Swain are listed contributors, and the site will have arts, fashion and multiculturalism posts, as well as podcasts. TOist likes the tagline 'Cuz We Don't Live in Tokyo or L.A.,' though we sometimes wish we did. Meantime, we'll settle for reading about cool things happening on our humble turf.
