Vernon Wells is struggling. Everyone knows it, not least of all Wells himself. His body language is practically crying out, “Yeah, I know I’ve been sucking all year; I really am trying, though!” His face is screwed into an almost permanent grimace of frustration. Predictably, he’s begun squeezing at the plate—yet by trying so hard to bust out of his season-long slump he’s actually made it worse.

Police watchdog groups are outraged over the revelation that Rexdale traffic cops had a system wherein officers were allowed to clock out early once they got 25 traffic tickets. Speeders, on the other hand, are furious that nobody told them about this system, the knowledge of which would have made real life re-enactments of all the simpler. (Although there still would have been the inevitable fights over who got to be Paul Walker and who got to be Tyrese Gibson, but you can't have everything.)

Despite prior controversy, this news is too good to let pass.

Canada faced a tougher challenge than expected in their World Baseball Classic opener Tuesday evening. After giving up three runs during an eighth inning South African rally, Ernie Whitt's team found themselves heading to the ninth trailing by a run. Fortunately the team exploded, scoring four in their next series while creating some breathing room for Minnesota Twins Jesse Crain to close out the 11-8 victory. Former Blue Jay Corey Koskie homered for the Canadians.

With the signing of AJ Burnett (pictured with Florida singer Brandy Rich) and BJ Ryan, the Toronto Blue Jays will pay $102 million to two pitchers who use letters as first names. (No offense to Torontoist blogger JK Nestruck.) Letters they want, letters they'll get. Here's the ABC's of the Jay's off-season thus far:

The Blue Jays made good use of the longball in their regular season-opener Monday afternoon. Orlando Hudson, Vernon Wells and Eric Hinske all went yard in the team’s disposal of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The three homeruns accounted for all of the Jays scoring in the 5-2 victory. 2003 Cy-Young award winner Roy Halladay looked strong in the effort, surrendering just a pair of runs and striking out seven over his seven innings of work. Closer Miguel Batista got the job done, shutting the door to pick up the save. The two teams will go at it again at Tropicana Field tonight.

The Blue Jays are playing their Grapefruit League home finale against the Philadelphia Phillies today. Opening Day starter and former Cy-Young award-winner Roy Halladay will take the mound in this 1993 World Series re-match.
