Little-known fact: Third-party mobile signs, such as the one above for the U of T Career Centre, are illegal in Toronto (and the City recently hired a sort of bounty hunter to drive around in a truck, seizing and impounding them). Perhaps this is one of the reasons why. Photo taken by Jonathan Goldsbie early Thursday morning at the northwest corner of St. George and Harbord. The sign has since been removed.......

Discarded building materials. Numerous species of wildlife. The odd quonset hut. Elements such as these make the Leslie Street Spit an oasis for the ever-curious, with a steady stream of discoveries waiting for unsuspecting walkers or cyclists. Towards the western end of the spit, the main pathway along the north side narrows into a low bridge, where this sign instructs users on the proper state of excitement required if the need arises the turn......

It may beat a straight-up name or number, but this tagger near Avenue Road and Lawrence could surely do better than 90s bumper sticker slogans. It's not just about design, people, it's about philosophy. Photo by rupert affen from the Torontoist Flickr Pool.......

It seems that some Toronto taggers are no longer content to scrawl their own names on blank concrete canvases around the city and are trying instead to make more of a cultural statement. Last year, references to composer Gustav Mahler popped up in several places around town. This year, a more cryptic stencil has appeared on the Humber Bay Arch Bridge, boldly proclaiming "ISBN 486-28495-6" for all to see and ponder. This International Standard......

Kleercut WARNING! Contains clearcut ancient forests www.kleercut.net When CBS Outdoor wrapped St. George station in vinyl ads promoting a certain brand of facial tissue, Greenpeace's Kleercut campaign decided to tackle the omnipresent sales pitch by generously sprinkling the premises with doses of perspective, reminding subway riders that the softness of Kimberly-Clark's products comes at the expense of unsustainably-harvested ancient forests, including the Boreal. To Kimberly-Clark, puppies may be adorable, but caribou, eagles, bears, and......

If you're thinking about Space Invaders right now, you probably spent too much time in the arcades of the early 1980s. But according to homeowner Eugene Popov, the inspiration for this colourful garage door wasn't a youth spent feeding quarters into game consoles; it was a few years living in South Africa. He took the motif from the Ndebele people of northern South Africa, who are renowned for their distinctive traditional house painting with......

Photos (top, and bottom) by wvs from the Torontoist Flickr Pool. The whole wide internet is getting crushes on it, so it's about time we wrote about Posterchild's brand new Bloor Street project: a portal! Posterchild—who, full disclosure, publishes Vandalist here every Friday—likes video games: his Super Mario question blocks from 2005 (which are pretty much exactly what they sound like) drew imitators and attention worldwide, most notably in Raveena, Ohio, where police called......

Photo by Jonathan Goldsbie. According to a December 2004 article in the Globe, Mike Harris is (or at least was at the time) the chairman of video advertising company Onestop; he got on board "in return for an equity stake" in the business. Presuming that he still has that stake (and why wouldn't he? he may be evil, but he's not stupid), Harris became a richer man two weeks ago, when the Toronto Transit......

When first we came across this graffiti on the wall of a U of T bathroom, it was merely a staredown: "Zombie Winston Churchill vs. Robot Hitler." When next we returned, they had obtained allies: "Vampire Stalin" and "Werewolf Mussolini," respectively. The sudden late addition of wild card "Ninja FDR," however, tipped the balance of power, but the "Ref: Mummy Castro" stepped in to keep him in check. Who next will join in on......

The last time we looked at accessible pedestrian signals (APS), those chirping and cuckooing crossing indicators for the visually-impaired, it was with some surprise at the city's claim that it simply couldn't afford to install APS at more than a handful of intersections each year. Instead of allocating enough money to improve availability of a fairly basic service to visually-impaired residents, the city instead looked for corporate sponsors to pick up some of the......
