WORDS: Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk will be appearing at the Isabel Bader Theatre this evening to promote his latest release, Pygmy. Palahniuk will read from the novel, followed by an audience Q&A, and a book signing for the first 150 people to pick up a wristband. Wristbands can be picked up on a first-come-first-serve basis from 5 p.m. onward at the theatre, and anyone who gets one is required to buy a copy of the book. Those who don't get wristbands in time will still be able to buy pre-signed copies of the book (Mr. Palahniuk is very generous). Isabel Bader Theatre (93 Charles Street West), 7 p.m., $10.

The Hottest Hot Docs

One of the most eagerly awaited festivals of the year, Hot Docs opens tonight with a screening of Act of God (pictured above), Jennifer Baichwal's contemplation on the effects of being struck by lightning (at the Winter Garden, 6:30 p.m.). It's followed at 9:30 p.m. by Inside Hana's Suitcase, a documentary covering the mysterious delivery of a battered suitcase from the Auschwitz museum to the Tokyo Holocaust museum, and the story the suitcase itself holds.

There is an English-language movie called Troll 2. It was neither made by people who speak English, nor contains trolls. Rather, the 1990 film is an Italian production (with an American cast) concerning vegetarian goblins whose consumption of humans is predicated upon first turning them into plants. Hence the line (the exact wording of which varies among sources), "She is becoming one with the vegetable world." If, after reading the preceding sentences you are not interested in seeing this Best Worst Movie (as the in-progress documentary regarding its cult status is titled), there is likely little else that might convince you.
