Toronto’s Small Press Book Fair runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Trinity St. Paul Centre, 427 Bloor Street West (just west of Spadina on the south side). Now in its twentieth year, the fair presents about 70 micro to medium-sized publishers and magazines. An archive of some of the fair's past and present exhibitors links to many of Toronto's small presses. You'll find comics, fiction, zines, word sculptures, artist's books,......

Torontoist Poetry Contest Reminder! At the beginning of the new year, Torontoist launched a poetry contest to encourage the penning of new poems about our fair city. To inspire you, we are presenting a series of previously published Toronto poems that will run until the contest closes March 15. Our third poem, "I Parked My Car Behind Loblaws and Knew I Would Never Die" is by writer, performer and composer Gary Barwin. The poem references......

Apologies for the lack of listings last week. The combination of the previous night’s Halloween party and an encroaching deadline on another project left little time for me to gather all the literary happenings in the city. Monday This Is Not A Reading Series presents Ben Schott (pictured), author of Schott’s Almanac. There will be a trivia pop quiz, surprise guests, and more – it’s a TINARS event, so you know it won’t be your......

If you're not completely burnt out from Nuit Blanche, there are plenty of quality shows to check out this week, including Joanna Newsom, Massive Attack, and Myspace darling Lily Allen. Alternatively, you Hip fans can skip out on the live music this week and save up your change for all four (yes, FOUR) of the recently announced shows at the Phoenix a few weeks from now. Can Gord Downie and pals really justify the......

A day late this week, but when you see the crazy number of new shows recently announced, you’ll understand why. With so much variety, there should be something for everyone coming up in the next month or so. Due to the large number of show listings, there will be no links this week (hey, it takes a LONG time to link up this stuff, my friends). As always, if there’s something we’ve missed and......

We have not one but two civics related events tonight in Toronto. At Trinity St. Paul's church just near Bloor and Spadina we have Jane Jacobs: A Public Celebration. There have been plenty of smaller celebrations for the life of Jane Jacobs but one more never hurts. Anne-Marie MacDonald and John Sewell are among some of the readers and to lighten things up we have music from Caitlin Broms-Jacobs and friends, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer......

Stroll around different tables set up with some of our favorite indie rags like Kiss Machine and puddlepress. For extra indie lit points, go see Emily Schultz, John Terpstra and more read later that day at The Victory Cafe, 6-9pm.......

The Year that Was: We won't presume to have seen it all, or read it all, or eaten it all. And so, a digested list of good things that happened in and around the GTA and the universe this year. Okay, in and around this year. Arrested Development, the DVD: A show everyone can love, and a replacement for the Office DVD, which we watched until we could watch no longer. "Unlimited juice...This party's gonna......

This weekend boasts a bevy of to-do options. You could check out the Modigliani show at the AGO, which Torontoist did last weekend, or gallery stroll on Queen Westerly West. We couldn't get into Midnight Movies, but maybe you can. The mood musicians play Lee's Palace tonight. What else, you ask? On Saturday we'll do our best not to see Alfie, and try instead to check out something much more highbrow, like King Kong V.......

The Toronto Small Press Book Fair happens twice a year, so if you miss it this Saturday, you only have six months to wait for its next incarnation. Still, you might want to check it out when it sets up shop at Bloor's Trinity St. Paul Church this weekend, especially if you're augering for an alternative to the Chapters-Indigo experience. One of the publishing houses in attendance will be Coach House Press, an imprint Torontoist......
