On Sunday night, Team Bloggers kicked some cab driver and celebrity impersonator ass on CBC's Test the Nation: Trivia. The evening ended with the cleanest sweep in quiz show history: bloggers had the best team score with an average of 50; team captain Samantha Bee had the highest score of all the Canadian celebs; teammate Rick Spence had the top in-studio score of 57.

Recently, Torontoist has probably been playing too many videogames. Not that that’s a problem, per se, but when you’ve become such an adrenaline junkie that you’re absent-mindedly tapping a non-existent "A" button to get past this bothersomely long “cut-scene” you’ve been watching only to remember that you’re actually watching The Omen, you have to admit that you’ve probably got a problem, and should probably cool off with some of Pedro Costa's longest films, showing at Cinematheque Ontario this week.

Design seems to be Toronto’s buzz word this weekend. Besides Come Up To My Room at the Gladstone, there’s that event that all Toronto designers with an asymmetrical haircut and a closet full of black clothing wait for like Christmas day: The Interior Design Show. IDS07 began Thursday night with a bang. Their kick-off party, the White Gala, was a fete complete with acrobats and fire breathers that roamed the many design kiosks which housed the hottest new interior designs.

With their 4-1 loss to the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs slipped back to a .500 record (19-19-6) yet again, and now sit tied for ninth place in the Eastern Conference, fighting for their playoff lives after having played more than half of their games this season. They're missing a hospital ward full of regular players due to injury (Mike Peca, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Ian White, Kyle Wellwood, Darcy Tucker, etc.). They continue to struggle with goaltending that, while decent at times, is far from superior, with neither Andrew Raycroft nor Jean-Sebastien Aubin stealing a single game for them this year. So what has general manager John Ferguson, Jr. done to shore up his team with the all-star break and stretch run looming? Well, yesterday he claimed former Leaf third/fourth-liner Travis Green (two points in seven games this year with Anaheim, 22 points in 82 games with Boston last season) off of waivers. While a noted faceoff and penalty kill specialist, Green is hardly a replacement for the likes of Tucker (19-12-31 in 39 games), Ponikarovsky (11-13-24 in 35 games) or Wellwood (9-22-31 in 35 games) on a team that even when fully healthy is still lacking offensively.

all of the films that have won awards) but we do at least agree with a couple of them. Better than nothing!

A slightly quieter day, day four, but then it was a Sunday. We didn't really see much on the press and industry schedule that we thought was a good bet during the afternoon so we hit the Canadian Film Centre barbecue, held in the grounds of the Windfields, the home of the Canadian Film Centre. A fair bus trip away, much like a lot of the festival it involved a lot of queueing (this time for food) and true to form it was worth waiting for, with everything from sausages in "pretzel buns" to Indian food on offer. While as we've already stated we're not that great at star spotting, we did notice K'Sun Ray, star of Fido, and Jamie Travis and Courtenay Webber, director and star respectively of the Patterns series (which we love to bits).

This year’s Short Cuts Canada selection was given a rather short shrift by Now magazine, but having seen a selection of the shorts, we consider their opinion rather short-sighted (“cut that short right now”– Ed.). A word to the wise: Much like the Wavelengths programme, we've seen several of the films but not of them, so there may be many gems still hidden.

So… The festival has been on for a full day, and Torontoist has very little to actually report, having stayed in for the night. Well, it did see the star of Short Cuts Canada film ‘Patterns’ (by Jamie Travis) wearing a stylish lime green dress and looking a bit confused, so there is that, if anything. That film is in Programme 5: Genre Redux, if you like the sound of her.

, given to Torontoist for review, contains scant amounts of the aforementioned ingredients. Not to say this is the Vince Carter of Mountain Goats albums - it's a good album and will receive a generous mark in our review - but there is a certain weirdness that plagues Mr Darnielle's most emotional output.

Nobody said it'd be easy, but no one ever said it would be this hard. It's the time of year, much like that time of year, that Mixtapes are not in the mandate. Sorry if the music selection is scant this week.

Whatever the glitch in the system, we'd still party with Miller. Especially if we could work brunch in there somehow. And perhaps we can.

In a world where people are willing to spend unimaginable amounts of money on grilled cheese sandwiches and Travis CD's, it's a refreshing change of pace to get a CD free of charge. For a limited time only, a compilation album with such artists as the Hidden Cameras, Frog Eyes, the Wrens, Court and Spark, Xiu Xiu, and Goblin Cock can be yours for nothing but your address. The catch - Absolutely Kosher Records offers the free compilation of independent hits (and misses) only to those willing to join their mailing list.
