Film Friday: The Trailer Park Boys Are Back

Technically, the season of films that you may have paid a premium to see early began last week—though admittedly, often with talent in attendance—at TIFF, with Midnight Madness opener Jennifer's Body receiving a full release (while TIFF was still on, too!). This week sees the release of TIFF films Bright Star and The Boys are Back, both of which have received decent enough reviews. But we're not especially interested in that, because there's a film festival currently running that rivals TIFF for its importance, NNAFF—the Nollywood North America Film Festival (though admittedly, it's all the way out in Mississauga). We've previously mentioned our fascination with Nollywood, and the documentary which covers what is reputedly the world's most productive film industry, Nollywood Babylon, plays this afternoon at at 5 p.m.

SPORTS: Mud-slinging mayhem, wheel-style, happens at this weekend’s Ontario Provincial Cyclocross Championships. There’s a good informative video about cyclocross here. Thankfully, there is the option of beer and free coffee for bystanders and cowbell handlers. Note that the race course runs right through the beer tent. Fun times! Riverdale Park (east side), 10 a.m.–2 p.m., $25–$35 to enter, FREE to watch.

Our title this week of course refers to Catch and Release, a film which has been so endlessly trailered on TV (and we don’t even watch that much) that Torontoist feels like we could recite the whole bloody film right now. “The man I was going to marry is dead! I’m sitting wearing my wedding dress and moping – it’s a girl thing! Kevin Smith is fat and talentless, but friends with Ben Affleck so he can be in this! I’ve fallen in love with you now, sexy and stereotypical unshaven male lead! The End!”

We already mentioned it in our news round-up but we thought we’d share with you this lovely picture of the assembled filmmakers and cast of Canada’s Top Ten films of 2006.

The subject on everyone's mind at Spacing this morning is Regent Park's revitalization project. Our favourite public space newswire will be featuring a series of documentaries on YouTube called Regent Park TV, a project by the Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre. The Toronto Public Space Committee will be screening another series on Regent Park at the Toronto Free Gallery on Thursday, December 14 @ 7:30.

Toro Magazine, free to Globe and Mail subscribers, released its Men of the Year issue yesterday.

I hope everyone has built their ark – it could get wet. Meteorologists are saying a month’s worth of rain – up to 75 mm – could fall upon Toronto over the next 36 hours. If Mel were still here he’d call in the army.

A brief aside; The London Film Festival is currently running and our sister site Londonist are covering it, and have already given a sterling review to one of our favourites from TIFF, Reprise. You might want to check it out.
