DANCE: Kicking off the Christmas season with some stylish stockings, the three-day run of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring The Rockettes starts today. This seasonal family favourite promises all of the high-kicking can-can spectacle of the original Christmas Spectacular at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City, complete with a dancing Santa and his reindeer, a scene from the Nutcracker, and a "living nativity" scene. Air Canada Centre (40 Bay Street), 7:30 p.m., $35–$84.

Classical and jazz music are often viewed with suspicion, largely due to the elitism that's associated with their listeners. Lang Lang and Herbie Hancock are perhaps the biggest superstars in these genres, respectively, and reactions to their current tour only reinforce the sense that classical and jazz aficionados can be too uptight for their own good. A quick Google News scan for mentions of the tour, which came to Toronto's Massey Hall Wednesday night, reveals review after review peppered with judgements like "excruciating," "banal," and "nose-dive"—words that inadvertently reveal their authors as holding on for dear life to staid expectations of what the music should sound like.

Bunch Family is at it again. The family oriented group, who also run the Family Dance Party and Bunch Rocks events, bring the Bunch Family Salon to The Arts and Letters Club (14 Elm St.) this Saturday, February 24th, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event "is a symposium of art, music and ideas for kids and parents," keeping the Bunch tradition that family events should be designed with both the children and parents in mind.

If you’re turned off at the idea of classical music concerts because they seem like an activity for the high society rich, think again. There are plenty of ways to enjoy Toronto’s healthy classical music scene on the cheap or for free.

Tomorrow evening’s performance will be slightly altered as the TSO will play Shostakovich’s second piano concerto followed by the eighth symphony.
