It's been a week and a half since the federal election was called and just five days remain before candidate nominations close. The races in most ridings are shaping up, but so far it looks like no candidates in Toronto–Danforth (including NDP leader Jack Layton) have managed to scrape together the 100 signatures required to submit their nomination papers. The city's right-wing councillors are trying to gang up on Mayor Miller and his budget. The Star reports that councillors Ootes, Minnan-Wong, Stintz, Shiner and Feldman strategized and decided that an item-by-item debate was not necessary. Instead council will be voting on the broad principles of the budget. The move is seen as a way to "sharpen" the debate perhaps adding fuel to the barely smouldering Pitfield vs. Miller flame.

Torontoist was visiting Dora Keogh's pub for the first monthly CommonPlaces drinks night, when he noticed a sign for the Ben Chin Meet and Greet. It seems that everybody's favourite Liberal candidate was going to be having a minor campaign event. Torontoist would have to say that Chin was an absolute gentleman, he even spoke to us about how impressed he was with his riding association, "one that couldn't put together an event for 15 people a year ago."

Eye weekly ran a huge article on NDPer Peter Tabuns, who's running to fill Marilyn Churley's vacant Queen's Park seat in Toronto Danforth. So we thought we'd even up the score a little bit by mentioning the Liberal candidate, Ben Chin. After getting axed at Toronto1 the former CBCer became the PR guy for the premier, but Chin, a long-time prominent journalist, car lover and son of political refugees is arguably a star candidate.
