It's Canadian Music Week and that means there's an unusually large number of hip hop shows going on. KRS-One will be teachin' at The Opera House on Saturday as he continues his Stop the Violence movement. RZA dons his Bobby Digital mask on Sunday at the Phoenix. There's also grimy New York hip-hop (M.O.P. on Friday), French rap (DJ Orgasmic and Cuizinier on Thursday), and a strong showcase of local talent (Friday's Exclaim! event).
Each week, Torontoist shows off the most interesting, creative, and cool submissions to our Torontoist Flickr Pool. We're especially partial to photos that show our city in a new light, highlight a recent event, and remind us why we live here. Join the Flickr pool and show us what you've got.
Canada named a new poet laureate today. She's Francophone multi-disciplinary artist Pauline Michel, and, by the looks of it, she plans to give Mayor Miller a run for his well-coiffed money in the fight for the country's most distinct hair. Michel, who hails from Asbetos, (yes, Asbestos) Quebec, receives $12,000 per year as Laureate, thus continuing to enforce the notion of poetry as a poor man's slog. Still, it all seems like a step in the right direction (since the post was founded in 2001). Michel is a progressive poet, and a political artist keenly atune to Quebec politics. Indeed, Michel will bring interdisciplinary, and slighty kooky, work to the peoples of Canada. If only the wire story that every paper ran could have gotten her name right!
