This Victoria Day weekend, two things will be on the minds of many Torontonians—beer and BBQ. The weather is good, you’re hanging with your friends, and you just want to kick back and chill with a cold one and a burger. You may have heard about what BBQing can do to your health and the environment, but let’s face it, it’s hard to resist the smoky aroma wafting from your neighbour’s backyard. Don't stress yourself about it—there are some eco-friendlier options when it comes to how you grill, and you can feel better about your BBQ by being choosy about what you grill. Plus, Toronto’s official BBQ season is quite short, leaving you plenty of time to "detox" and focus on healthier fare. That’s what we’re telling ourselves anyway.

Once a month Torontoist would like to encourage you to drag yourself off the couch and across the room to that nice, comfy swivel chair in front of your computer, to experience something from the wonderful world of streaming. Anyone who's visited YouTube or eBaum's World knows how gratifying watching two Asian kids lipsynch to Jessica Simpson can be! So in the interest of expanding your horizons (or at least giving you some way to kill time at the office without actually having to do any work), we'll find some interesting, funny, or just plain stupid and entertaining way to amuse yourself with your computer (without the need for pornography).

Sorry George, but the reviews are in and the One just plain sucks. The ABC produced, CBC simulcasted Idol/Next Top Model/Big Brother mashup sucks so much that the National (which was actually bumped forward an hour) managed to get almost three times the number of viewers. The One just managed to pull 236,000 viewers compared to the National which pulled in a respectable 550,000+ viewers. Antonia Zerbisias goes on at length at the show's shortcomings.

George and The Hour In a strange turn of events, Canadian media heartthrob, George Stroumboulopoulos confirms that he has signed on to the new ABC reality show, The ONE: Making a Music Star which debuts on July 18th.

-The One of a Kind Show started yesterday, with artisans from all over the country hawking their wares. It's a bit of a trek out to Exhibition Place (the show, which seems to get bigger every year, is housed in the National Trade Centre), but it's worth it for the jam sampling alone, and it sure beats the Eaton Centre for charm and choice. Runs to December 4th.

The Bloor Cinema is heavy with festivals so shortly after the celebration of its 100th birthday, with The One-Minute Film and Video Festival starting tonight,as blogged below, and last night’s opening night gala of the Reel Asian Film Festival, The Motel.

Start the stop watches: The one-minute men and women of The One-Minute Film and Video Festival ready set go for opening night at the Bloor Cinema this evening. If the festival's name doesn't self-explain, here's the gist: Each filmmaker is given a subject in which to base a one-minute short film on. Last year's focus was "firsts," and this year's theme is "intersections." Given the length of the films (that's 60 seconds for those who don't keep time in minutes), there's a good number of screenings per night with good number of perspectives broached. Tonight's notables include Cowboy Junkies guy Jeff Bird, Toronto-area blogger Matthew C. Brown, and our very own comicatrix Alice Phieu.
