For some men, a suit feels like an unnatural and constricting male uniform; a way of burying individuality in the conventional business attire of dark suit, white shirt, and tie. There are certainly a fair share of businessmen, bankers and lawyers wandering through the PATH corridors beneath the Financial District who carry themselves in exactly this fashion. For those attuned to the subtle details of masculine appearance, however, the suit offers a perfect canvas for the conspicuous display of their personality and taste. The distinctions between the two may seem slight, but for the individiual responding to the homogenization of life—that the exact same ready-to-wear designer suit is available in Toronto, Dubai or Barcelona—a bespoke suit is the ultimate means of self-expression.

Many of us developed an affection for opera early in life through Looney Tunes versions of Rossini and Wagner. For some, having Elmer Fudd chant “Kill the Wabbit” to the tune of “Ride of the Valkyries” in Chuck Jones's animated masterpiece taught us everything we wanted to know about opera. But if your ambition to appreciate the finer things in life extends beyond Bugs Bunny, real opera could be an intimidating world of old rich people, dead composers, elitist intellectualism and impenetrable European languages.

The House has overwhelmingly passed a motion recognizing Quebec as a nation within Canada. 15 Liberal MPs and Garth Turner voted against, although it probably would have been more if it had been a free vote for the Tories. Hey, remember when somebody, I forget who exactly but his name rhymed with "Even Carper", promised that all votes in Parliament on non-budgetary matters would be free votes?

And check this – if one of your friends is more into sports, you can bring them to a literary event disguised as a boxing match. For a boxing fan like me, it doesn't get any better.

A shooting near Front and Jarvis yesterday left a 20-year old man clinging to life. Some 16 shots were fired and witnesses claimed they saw three men run off. The shooting and a search by police afterwards locked down two nearby elementary schools.

It’s an interesting and potentially important time for English language Canadian filmmakers, with several Canadian films managing to reach cult hit status, such as It’s All Gone Pete Tong and The Life And Hard Time of Guy Terrifico. With only five percent of movies seen by Canadians made by Canadians (according to the program guide) and the writer of It’s All Gone Pete Tong Michael Dowse expressing a wish for Canadian content quotas for cinemas as well as TV and radio, the 3rd annual Canadian Filmmaker’s Fest, held with the support of he Toronto Film Festival Group's Film Circuit, is timely.
