FESTIVAL: Ladyfest kicks off their highly anticipated music series tonight, as the week-long festival continues. Tonight, come out to the Boat for performances from electronic soul group Lal, alternative crooner Emma McKenna, and experimental pop band Miau Miau. Also starting today is "Ooh-La-La," the female-identifying art exhibit at Beaver Hall Gallery (rescheduled from Sunday), which will run until September 27. The Boat (158 Augusta Avenue), 9 p.m., $5–$10.

FESTIVAL: A two-day tribute to cult film The Big Lebowski is going down this weekend. LollapaDUDEza kicks off tonight with a screening of the film at Rancho Relaxo, and a Lebowski-themed costume contest. Following the screening, there will be a Lebowski trivia competition, as well as karaoke. Your ticket also gets you a free drink at the bar! If you can't make it out this evening, LollapaDUDEza has booked the Bathurst Bowlerama for three hours of (what else?) bowling tomorrow, from 4–7 p.m. After that, there will be a tribute night back over at the Rancho where local bands will be covering CCR songs and other Big Lebowski soundtrack gems. Rancho Relaxo (300 College Street), 9 p.m., $15 (or $25 for a two-day pass, which includes admission to bowling).

It's election day today! So go vote. If you don't vote, nobody will ever truly love you and you will die alone and unmourned. This is a statistical fact.

This Thursday marks the premiere of Toronto's Hip-Hop Karaoke night. Brought to you by Never Forgive Action and Earwaks, and hosted by local rapper More or Les (who was interviewed by Torontoist last spring) and local DJs Dalia, Numeric and Ted Dancin', this party promises to be more than your basic karaoke night. First of all, it's hip-hop, so you may want to practice ahead of time or do the track you've known since you were in Grade 6. Secondly, the DJs will be spinning live instrumentals under your rhymes, so there will be no cheesy MIDI track playing or words that highlight as you go (This means you have to know your song really well!). Thirdly, it's all rap all night long, so no one will be singing Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Light."

Who Is DJ Cyber-Rap?

There's gonna be a couple of skid bag DJ's named Paul Devro and m!g!h! spinning chunky southern Parisian Iraqi pop gangsta music at Drug Money's party at The Boat this evening. If you're one of the lucky few, you might even get a spliff of sensei for showing up. Hopefully you're confused.

For those interested in 'it'-specific events, this Tall Poppy is for you. The Boat, the venerable 'It' club in Kensington Market, is the site of an increasingly popular monthly dance party called Zoi Zoi, the venerable 'It' DJ night in Toronto. If that wasn't enough 'It's, resident DJ Mimi plays what has become the 'It' music of the day - French language pop. We're using the 'It' phrase so much because we've never actually been able to get in to the packed Zoi Zoi nights, and thus knew sh-'It' about them. Luckily the redoubtable DJ Mimi was nice enough to help us with the translation.

one song on repeat for the entire night. The first, a Just "Ace of Spades" night was covered extensively over at Zoilus. Last night was Just "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, and spontaneous head-banging did occur. TOist missed the first three hours but figured it was pretty much the same as the hour we spent at The Boat listening to Bohemian Rhapsody over and over and over and over and over and over again. All for a good cause of course: The money went to the AIDS Committee of Toronto.

Barrett, a pianist who took up the Kalimba in the last year and a recent Linguistics and English U of T grad, has an artfully-packaged EP out called Earth Sciences. It includes a song called Stop giving your children standardized tests, part one. This weekend was brought to you by Kensington and the number 5. Okay, we made up the bit about the number 5, but Kensington was the august August weekend theme. From a long and endearing piece about Kensington kids in the Sunday Star to Pedestrian Sundays to Saturday Night in the market, Kensington was the word. So let's proceed with a short wrap up of the newly crazy Saturday Night scene.

The Goin' Steady party, which debuted last month to widespread glee, takes over The Boat again this Saturday. TOIst loves a good do-wop party, and this one gets bonus points for attendees that actually dress for the dance. See you there.
