Recently, Torontoist went canoeing in Algonquin Park (we got 34 mosquito bites). However, arguably the most amusing thing to happen during our entire trip was passing a billboard on our way into the park advertising a "Dock in a Box." We instantly became distracted by a lengthy fantasy that the company knew exactly what it was doing and included a YouTube video on its website about how it created the Dock in a Box (you know—"One, we cut a hole in the box; two, we put our tech in the box!"), but were recently disappointed to find that there’s nothing funny at all on the company website.

Yes, it's that time of year again - the Toronto International Film Festival Group have begun revealing the films that will be showing at their 31st Annual Film Festival (this year running from September 7th-16th). If we remember, the opening gala will be The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (we don't blame you, they announced it aaages ago) but they've now revealed their "Best of the International Film Circuit" selection (flicks that have already played at other festivals) and it's a doozy. Here at Torotontoist Towers our picks have to be Palme d'Or winner The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Ken Loach's portrayal of Ireland's bid for independence in the 1920s, and Takashi Miike's gay prison love drama/murder mystery Big Bang Love, Juvenile A. The full press release can be seen at the Toronto International Film Festival Group website.

Happy New Year, film fans! Or, perhaps, not. For we’ve slammed like so much booze filled new year vomit upon the tarmac of the post-Christmas lull, in which basically nothing of interest is released in any format. Certainly this week fans of more high brow cinema will have to hang on like those last few drips of chunky bile saliva for Cinematheque Ontario’s winter programme, starting on January 13th, which we’ll probably talk about then, and which features yet more Mikio Naruse, but lots of other exciting stuff like a limited run of The Passenger, the long lost hidden by Jack Nicholson flick.

We here at Torontoist thought we’d try out a new weekly feature listing the best (and worst) films to be hitting Toronto’s screens in the following week, as a city which features both multiplexes, second run theatres and blessed with several vintage single screen movie houses, there’s a lot that can be missed.
