Urban Planner: November 3, 2009

MUSIC: Basement Jaxx, the over-the-top house music imports from the UK, are in Toronto tonight for a DJ set at the Century Room. The duo, consisting of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, first gained notoriety in Canada in 2001 with the single "Where's Your Head At?" (complete with a crazy video featuring monkey-human brain transplants) from their second album, Rooty. They're out promoting their latest album, Scars, which is characteristic of most of their work, using plenty of vocals and live instruments to complement the sample and synth. Century Room (580 King Street West), doors open at 10 p.m., $20 at the door.

Urban Planner: July 7, 2009

PERFORMANCE: Miranda Mulholland and The Roaring Girl Cabaret kick off their month-long residency at The Cameron House tonight, showcasing a mix of classical musicianship and contemporary jazz, with some folk and opera to round out the sound. Mulholland is a virtuoso fiddler and has worked and performed with the likes of Jim Cuddy and Sarah Slean and appeared in the acclaimed show Bowfire. The Cameron House (408 Queen Street West), every Tuesday night in July, 6–9 p.m., pay-what-you-can.

FESTIVAL: “Aging and Creativity” is the theme of the second annual Silver Screens Arts Festival presented by Ryerson University. The week-long event showcases films, theatre, talks, and exhibitions about issues that seniors face, helping to cultivate a creative "senior's voice" through the arts. Today’s kick-off for the festival includes a keynote address by Dr. Gene Cohen that highlights the biological and emotional foundations of creativity. Venues at the Ryerson University campus, see schedule for event details, ticket prices vary from FREE to $20.

Spring launch season slows this week, but finishes strongly with new poetry collections by national treasures bill bissett and David McFadden. Tomorrow night, help David celebrate his Selected Poems: Why Are You So Sad?, edited and introduced by Stuart Ross. Here’s Stuart, from the intro:

For those of you who didn’t attend on Wednesday night, the news coming out of the Pontiac Quarterly is that founder Damian Rogers is leaving the poetry/prose/arts/music night. Liz Clayton is taking over organizing and hosting duties, with her first edition slated for October.

The Diamond Cherry Reading Series – run by local poets and small-press publishers Devon Gallant and Julie Cameron Gray – kicks-off the week with performances by audio poet Hilary Peach (Poems Only Dogs Can Hear) and singer/songwriter/poet Nik Beat. The series takes place each month at the Zemra Lounge – 778 St. Clair West – and starts at 8pm. It’s free, too, so you have no excuse not to go.

Strong Words, the indie reading series put on by Indiepolitik, is celebrating its first year anniversary. Why, it seems like just a few months a go we were coddling baby Strong Words, burping it, changing its diapers and now it's all grown up and publishing anthologies.
