The Raptors have reached the halfway point of the season, and almost every news outlet in town has been engaged in the mid-season ritual of handing out report cards.

In the best campaign commercial since HuckChuckFacts, Chris Bosh has assumed the identity of a Texas used car salesman in order to try to drum up votes to make it to this year's NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans.

rsz_2007_01_03Garbajosa-2.jpgYesterday, Jorge Garbajosa was named the Rookie of the Month for the NBA’s Eastern Conference, and he has been leading NBA.com’s unofficial Rookie of the Year Race for the past month. Garbajosa, however, is not a typical rookie; he doesn’t look like one and he doesn’t play like one.

Toro Magazine, free to Globe and Mail subscribers, released its Men of the Year issue yesterday.

Even the most hardened, macho, cynical, Valentine's Grinch couldn't refuse a heart-warming greeting from NBA MVP Steve Nash. The Canadian point guard is one of many Phoenix Suns players to be part of the organization's E-Greeting project.

Victoria BC native Steve Nash has been awarded the Lou Marsh Award as Canadian Athlete of the Year for 2005. The Toronto Star and the elected voting panel awarded Nash the distinction in a unanimous decision announced Thursday in Toronto. The Phoenix Suns point guard was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player last season after leading his team to the Western Conference Championship. He finished the 2004-05 season with just under 200 assists more than the next closest challenger, and in doing so, turned a non-playoff team into the highest scoring group in the league.

The National Basketball Association's MVP and super cute BC native Steve Nash could very well be approaching superhero status in Toronto. Over the weekend, millions (or thousands) of Nashophiles were speculating whether the camera phone picture below, courtesy of Gawker, was really Hair Canada playing an impromptu game of pick-up in NYC. The Gawker reportage, which posted at least three pictures of Nash balling with non-NBA players, have since been confirmed. What a guy!

Steve Nash looked as out of place as ever on Sunday afternoon after wrestling the NBA’s MVP trophy away from perennial heavyweights, Shaquille O’Neal and Allan Iverson. With the trio all adding spectacular seasons to their resumes in 04-05, it was the Canadian who took home the hardware. The Victoria, BC native edged O’Neal by seven first-place votes, in what proved to be the fourth-closest tally in the past twenty-five years. Only the sixth guard to win the award, Nash will now join the names of Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson in the league’s history books. Nash and former Chicago Bull, Bill Wennington are the only Canadians to ever win the award… OK, just checking if you were paying attention.

Don’t look now, but the Toronto Raptors are only 2 games out of third place in the Eastern Conference. Currently sitting 10th, and three and a half games back of the streaking Chicago Bulls for the final playoff spot, the Raps can thank the NBA playoff structure and their abysmal Atlantic division for their opportunity at a home court playoff series. Despite how poor a record, the division leader is guaranteed a top-three seed. With their play of late, the 18 and 24 Raptors have a strong chance of securing the division title. Torontoist is thrilled with the Raptors turnaround, while equally excited that Vince Carter’s New Jersey Nets sit dead last in the same Atlantic Division.
