Yo! T.O.! ...It Rhymes!

Calling all socialites! But only if you live in Toronto! Just in case Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, etc. ad nauseum don't provide enough virtual social networking opportunities for you, yo! T.O launched this weekend, a Toronto-centric site claiming exclusivity to the market (guess they're never heard of Meet Me in TO?) and an honest, no hidden fees or agendas approach to your daily social internetting.

Facebook is the shit. Torontoist has a group on it (778 members, what), but everyone's favourite social networking/time-wasting site just unveiled a new feature that allows organizations––be they bands, companies, websites, or whatever else you can think of––to have their own page. If you like what that organization is doing, you can add yourself as a fan, and then you automagically get a neat little box on your profile that says "I am a fan of...", like the one at right.

Microsoft has agreed to buy 1.6% of Facebook for $240,000,000, giving the social networking site a valuation of around $15 billion. The deal is good for both parties, with Bill Gates finally hanging out with the cool kids, and 23-year-old Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg getting to throw an awesome kegger.

A few weeks ago, Torontoist discussed a number of emerging collaborative gatherings, including Talk20 and Dorkbot, and a considerable omission was made when Drupal Toronto was left off that list. Toronto is quite renowned for having a very active and vital community contributing to the development of the Drupal Content Management System (CMS). What is Drupal and why should you care? Put quite simply, Drupal is an open source system for building websites. It is like Movable Type, the engine behind Torontoist and the Gothamist network, but it is extremely flexible and can be used to build any kind of site, from a simple blog to a social networking site. A global community of developers are working on modules that you can plug into the platform for all kinds of applications, from Google Maps mashups, to organizing a portfolio, to tracking recipes, Drupal is fantastic at organizing information at all scales.

Wireless number portability (WNP), the ability to keep your cellular phone number when you change service providers, came to Canada in March of this year. The masses of consumers looking to free themselves from their frustrating cell companies cheered. Those cheers turned to grumbles with the realization that the spiffy new phones received for “free” came attached to lengthy service contracts. Breaking a contract can make switching to (or from) the company with the cute dogs in the ads prohibitively expensive.
