Don't make fun. It's a defining moment in 80s cinema. Not since Good Will Hunting have we seen a film shot in Toronto do as good a job at disguising the city as the classic Adventures in Babysitting. The former film took place in Boston while the latter is in Chicago, and a combination of good establishing shots and some actual location shooting are almost enough to disguise our fair city's acting as the......

Every weekday morning, bright and early, we feature a photo (or two) from a photographer in the Torontoist Flickr Pool. It's our way of giving the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention that they deserve. Day 55 BY JENNYROTTEN......

On Thursday night at the Silver Dollar, Jay Reatard's show got ugly. The Memphis band's shows usually do, but almost never like Thursday's: Reatard punched a patron who climbed on stage square in the face and angrily packed up his gear (video above), before Dan Burke, the Dollar's legendary and notorious booker, hopped on stage himself, delivering a tirade against Reatard ("fuck this American...that's fucking pussy shit"). On his blog on Friday, Reatard recapped......

When local promoter Dan Burke so unabashedly declared “less drugs, more shows” as what he looks forward to for this calendar year, no one believed the drugs portion of that resolution—but Friday is reason to start believing the show portion. Friday night will gather many to the Silver Dollar to celebrate the CD release of local experimental composer Katie Stelmanis. Widely recognized for her contributions to all-female baroque rockers Galaxy (R.I.P.) and alt-gospel howlers Bruce......

It's almost time to say goodbye to North By Northeast for yet another year. Two longs nights have past, leaving tonight as the last chance to get out an enjoy some of the best new music from around the world. Seeing as it is Saturday, expect a lot of the shows to be really busy so going earlier is always better than later. All the cool kids are doing it! But before we get back......

Tokyo's Zoobombs played their final show last night at the Silver Dollar after playing five shows in Toronto in the last week. Organized by the infamous Dan Burke, the shows were an effort to attract industry interest in the Japanese band without any help from the industry at all. In a direct offensive against last week's CMW festival, Burke's aim seemed to be to have a successful slew of shows with the same band "without......

The year is winding down and so is the music, which is kind of nice, actually, because there seem to be a lot of tours already gearing up for 2007. Hopefully Alexisonfire isn't one of them...we have no idea how they can manage to go onstage and scream for 7 solid days (they have a few more shows this week). Insanity. Best bets for this week include Royal Wood tonight at the Cameron House......

Everyone must be getting ready to hibernate for the winter...not as many shows this week and nothing of great interest announced recently. However, the live acts that are playing this week are pretty damn good, if we may say so. Royal Wood is at the Cameron House every Monday evening, and is the perfect choice if you're looking to chill out with a good friend and a glass of wine. Tuesday night, head to......

Compared to the past few weeks, this one's a bit quieter in the live music world, but there are still some decent shows to check out. Of note, Beck brings his two turntables and a mic to the Ricoh Coliseum tonight (too bad about the location), you can get Comfortably Numb (in a few ways, we're sure) at the Opera House or check out the moustachiod Killers at the Kool Haus on Friday, and......

After 10 years, The Deadly Snakes packed it in on Friday evening at The Horseshoe, for what was touted as their "last show ever" (all lies...the real last show was Saturday night at the Silver Dollar). With a sold out audience, all the tambourines in the city, a few shooters or 30, and many guests taking the stage, Andre Ethier and company treated us to almost three solid hours of rock and debauchery. I'd......

Tsk, tsk. Late two weeks in a row. Someone needs a good spanking. Next week we'll get our act together and put Torontoist before busy schedules and get this puppy out on time. Pinky swear. As always, let us know in the comments section if you're heading to any good shows that we missed. Particularly for this Thursday...we need some hot action that night. Recently Announced Sept. 11 - M Ward @ Mod Club, $16.50......

A day late this week, but when you see the crazy number of new shows recently announced, you’ll understand why. With so much variety, there should be something for everyone coming up in the next month or so. Due to the large number of show listings, there will be no links this week (hey, it takes a LONG time to link up this stuff, my friends). As always, if there’s something we’ve missed and......

Yes, we followed Torontoist contributor Joshua Errett's advice and hit the Adam Brown at the Boat. It's refreshing to see a band that still truly believes that the rock anthem is not dead. It's even more refreshing to see a former boy from Montreal move to Berlin and turn into a rip-roaring, crowd pleasing, soul machine. Torontoist caught the first of three shows from King Khan & The Shrines. Khan, his brass section and cheerleader......

Two more chances to see the much talked about Laura Barrett before the year is up: She'll be playing/baking at the Rancho Relaxo for the Band Bake-Off tonight and playing only at a Amazing confluence of Music and Funny! Holiday Fundraiser at the Silver Dollar on Thursday. In our experiences, Ms Barrett cooks up a worth-while show and will add you as a MySpace friend if you ask nicely. Torontoist-favourite Henri Faberge and his self-contained......

It's the Wonka Factory of posters! As most of us know, poster-making is not the one-step process it was once thought to be. Here is Torontoist comics-girl Alice designing the poster for tomorrow night's Oh the Humanity show at Silver Dollar. Courage!......

Funny how quickly a show can go from pariah to the hot ticket in town. Sunday's New Pornographers show created a dilemma for fans who didn't want to miss seeing the full-roster band including Destroyer's Dan Bejar (also opening the show) and Neko Case (whose own skyrocketing fame all but ensures this is the last time she'll be able to tour with the band), but on the other hand, didn't want to make the trek......

Just that the band was never still enough to get a decent photo should be enough evidence of a worthwhile live set. The ZooBombs were a blurry highlight at last night's New Orleans Benefit at the Comfort Zone, even while only getting to play three or so songs. The ZBs may not all speak perfect English ("This is love song. Dedicated to New Orleeeeeans...and YOU!"), the sentiment came through pretty clear last night. One......

Ever since the 1950’s, rock’n’roll and meat have become one in the same. They ceased to be distinct entities with the advent of Americana diners and the popularity of rotund musicians like Fats Domino and later Elvis, and haven't separated themselves since. By the 1970’s, rock’n’roll actually became a meal. "What do you want for dinner tonight, sugar-face?" "Let’s have ourselves a little rock’n’roll, cowboy!" And there’s at least one 8-piece retro-psych ensemble band......

Lately, Toronto audiences have been no strangers to the diverse talents in Japanese alternative music. The appearance of Damo Suzuki a couple of years back at Wavelength was a nice surprise, and the "melodic instrumental noise unit " known as Mono put on a fantastic display of intensity this past summer at Harbourfront during a set at the Beats, Breaks and Culture Festival. And of course, there's Ron Burd, director of the music department at......

Canadian Music Week, which is not really a week, kicks off tonight with what looks like a promising line-up. Then again, with like 200 bands, how could there NOT be a promising line-up? The CMW shotgun approach has Torontoist looking forward to this small smattering of shows: Absynthe Minded, Thursday March 3 at Kathedral @ 10:00 pm Barbie Bangkok, Thursday March 3 at The Drake Hotel @ 12:30 am controller.controller, Wednesday March 2 at The......

Those wise sages at Loverboy know what they're talking about! Torontoist spent a good part of the week recovering from the amazing Wavelength Fifth Anniversary shows last weekend. This weekend seems to be just as packed with musical goodness. Tonight, Broken Social Scenester and Apostle of Hustle Andrew Whiteman will be bending the rules of space time and playing three shows: two at the Drake, at 8pm and 10pm (sold out) and at the Toronto......

So there we were, sitting at Phil's Original BBQ on College. There was a chill in the air, and the place was near empty. But we were warm. Plates of generously portioned pulled pork and barbecued chicken swarmed our table. And just as we set into our food, the management put on Paul Reddick and the Sidemen's 'Rattlebag,' a CD that has dazzled Torontoist since we got it for free while working the student reporter......
