It's a Sunshine Day

Ryan Bigge—Toronto's least ironically named freelancer and, according to the first issue of Spacing, a former "magaging editor" of Adbusters—last year estimated that Richard Florida pulled in $170 000 a year from U of T. When the 2008 Public Sector Salary Disclosure (Sunshine) list was released, Bigge took the figure of $169,999.98 to mean that his guess was only two cents off. What Bigge failed to take into account, however, was that the 2008 list was actually the disclosure of salaries for 2007, and only included money paid out for that period. In other words, because Florida was only hired away from George Mason University in July '07, the money on the list covered just the half-year he was at U of T.

Rosie DiManno sucks. Every day (or so), poor Toronto Star readers are subjected to another over-the-top, awkwardly-written, occasionally-insulting column about the day's top depressing story from the purple-streaked purveyor of pulp. It's about time someone took out the trash.

We think the Toronto mediasphere is wayyy to civilized and friendly. Anyone who follows media blogs in places like NYC or London know that there's constant back-biting, rivalries, jealousies and cattiness. Petty, some would say but entertaining to many many more.

A couple of months back Torontoist wrote about the sushi stretch on Bloor Street. Our readers weighed in recommending favourite places and eventually went to the other extreme and raved about fish and chip places they liked.

Torontoist likes the attention being paid to the city's deserving bloggers, but it's hard not to feel that the Globe piece turns blogging, a timely and committment-requiring endeavour, into a skill that can be hastily co-opted to serve the immediate purpose of finding a jobby-job.
