Many of us developed an affection for opera early in life through Looney Tunes versions of Rossini and Wagner. For some, having Elmer Fudd chant “Kill the Wabbit” to the tune of “Ride of the Valkyries” in Chuck Jones's animated masterpiece taught us everything we wanted to know about opera. But if your ambition to appreciate the finer things in life extends beyond Bugs Bunny, real opera could be an intimidating world of old rich people, dead composers, elitist intellectualism and impenetrable European languages.

This just in: Conrad Black has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison for his role in "misappropriating" (which is Rich People for "stealing") millions of dollars from the Hollinger newspaper empire, and for obstructing justice by allowing certain documents, which would have determined whether or not he was guilty of the nine charges he managed to evade (including racketeering), to "disappear." Mayworks runs til May 8th, so you only have a few days left to get in on the festival that 'celebrates working class culture.' Tonight, they offer up a provocatively-titled performance piece called Poetry is Not a Luxury, which will attempt to answer the question 'Is poetry for bored rich people?' They will answer this question through a three-person performance installation using to-do lists, medical bills and bank balances that the audience may peruse. You had us at to-do lists!
