No Country For Old Men cleans up at the Oscars. The Coen Brothers finally got some big-time recognition with nods for best picture, best directing, best adapted screenplay, and best husband of Frances McDormand. In other news, a bunch of Canadians got nominated for stuff and didn't win any of it. (There! We could totally write entertainment news for any major Canadian newspaper now!)

Begrudging wireless carriers were able to hold it off for two years but as of today, wireless number portability (WNP) will be available to their customers in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Québec. Interest in releasing phone numbers was voiced by the government in February 2005 and although there was agreement from phone service providers to do so, little planning for implementation came from the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA). The following December, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) sped up the process by imposing a deadline of March 14, 2007.

On any given weekday, around 5 p.m., you can expect to find a bit of a mob gathered around the corner of Queen and John. That’s when MuchMusic's Much on Demand airs live and excitable teens like to gather to catch a glimpse of a celebrity—any celebrity. And since it's March Break this week, you can expect double the crowds as guests like Christian rock band Relient K and High School Musical's Jordan Pruitt drop by to plug their products.

Opposition parties are crying foul over Harper's use of military jets. After accusing the Liberals of overusing the jets for personal business during their time in government, Harper used one to fly his son to Toronto for a Leafs game. Pot, meet kettle.

Just about one year after the last major Toronto (areaish) concert, Richard Branson announced that the Toronto Islands will host the Virgin Festival over a weekend in early September. This is the first time the Virgin Festival crosses the pond outside the UK. Note that this is the first time that Centre Island will be closed to the public.

Sir Richard Branson becomes an ally in the fight for 'number portability.' The head Virgin has taken out a full page ad in today's Globe, beseeching 'Canada's 15 million mobile customers' and interested Canadians to speak up in support of 'number portability.' Number portability is industry speak for keeping your number when you switch carriers. Obviously, Sir Rich has a vested interest in the right to keep and switch, as it would inspire more people to cross over to Virgin, but it's a good opportunity to get something Canadians deserve all the same. Branson's ads invite people to email their support to mynumberismobile@virginmobile.ca, or to write to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. Without Richards' push, the CWTA has plans to roll out number portability in late 2007. Naturally, Branson says this "is an absolute disgrace and completely unacceptable."
