Five days of Pan-Asian cinema in the city kicks off tomorrow night, as the Reel Asian International Film Festival celebrates its eleventh annual incarnation. Bloor Cinema will present the Opening Night Gala film, Finishing the Game, at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A session with lead actor Roger Fan and producer Julie Asato. Added bonus: local comedy troupe Asiansploitation will perform beforehand on the red carpet. This year's festival is poised to impress. And......

Festival fever is sweeping the city—after all, it’s that time of year. But, perhaps incredibly, there are people for whom Brad Pitt sightings and red carpet galas just aren’t worth the Ben Mulroney-sized hype. What, for example, is the ardent audiophile to do in this landscape of visual media tyranny? Well, the good folks over at the Music Gallery have the answer. Starting tonight, the second-ever X Avant music festival gets underway with a headline......

As Torontoist reported yesterday, the Hummingbird Centre is changing its name to the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, marking the second change in corporate naming rights during the venue's half-century existence. Support of the site has ranged from a philanthropic brewer (O'Keefe Brewing head E.P. Taylor) to a multinational media company. As today's ad promised, Yonge and Front has seen a wide range of performances since the O'Keefe Centre officially rolled out the......

All photographs in this article courtesy of Much Music. In the harsh cold light of the morning of June 18th, it’s time to step back a bit and take a look at the overall experience of liveblogging the MMVAs. What did we think? Well, firstly, in retrospect, we feel kind of bad about just how badly we cussed a lot of celebrities—particularly those who hit the little stage. In general, the blame may actually......

Yes! The image above, taken at last year's MMVAs and courtesy of Much Music, is just a mere taster of the kind of reaction Torontoist's legions of adoring fans will make when we stroll down the red carpet on our way to liveblog this year's Much Music Video Awards from on-site. Who cares about seeing live performances from Avril Lavigne, Billy Talent, The Used and more! When you can instead sit in front of......

Are you an awards show fanatic? Do you long for a chance to strut down that red carpet in a fancy tuxedo or evening gown, but lack the talent necessary to get there? Or, do you just like hockey? More importantly: do you like sitting? Well here's your chance to be a seat filler for the 2007 NHL Awards. Seat filling is like a game of musical chairs, except in formal wear, and depending on......

Starting September 1, the Hamilton television station known as CH will be rebranded as E! Entertainment Television. E! is an American entertainment and lifestyle cable broadcaster best known for its wildly successful E! True Hollywood Story series. CH corporate parent CanWest MediaWorks will license the E! trademark and manage Canadian content programming, including online, mobile, satellite radio and video-on-demand platforms. There are also CH-branded stations in Montreal, Victoria, Kelowna and Red Deer which are included......

We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyway, onto the -ists. Austinist happily anticipated fall's Austin City Limits, even though they're not fully recovered from South By Southwest. In other......

Some folks love the old school looks, but digging through the bins at second-hand stores makes their skin crawl. Others are overwhelmed by the time commitment it takes to find that one perfect Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Silk tunic top from the 70s. For every one person who haunts the thrift shops for the thrill of the hunt, there's, like, one thousand who’d rather go to Old Navy because it's cleaner and more convenient.......

Last night's star-studded 17th Annual Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP Awards brought prestigious wins for local play 'Da Kink In My Hair and playwright trey anthony. The play started as a one-woman Fringe Festival production and enjoyed multiple sold-out runs in Toronto until expanded by the Mirvishes at the Princess of Wales Theatre last year. Set in a West Indian hair salon on Eglinton Avenue, the production involves the stories of multiple women who pass through......

There are literally dozens of blogs covering the Festival this year, and while most of them are personal sites listing what movies they could or couldn't get into, a few stand out. Torontoist will do his best to roundup the blogosphere's TIFF coverage. Everyone, and we mean everyone is talking about Borat but there are other films playing at this festival don't you know? Kenneth Branagh and Stephen Fry's adaptation of Mozart's the Magic Flute......

Let's just whip around the world to see what the other -ists are up to... SFist can finally admit it: It's possible that Bary Bonds juiced.  Is Bay Area artist (tempted to put quotes around that) Thomas Kinkaid "kinda crappy" or "explosively crappy" or does he just like marking territory?  SFist wonders.  Technology comes in the form of new Mac goodness and a broken cell courtesy of the mayor of Oakland.  Also check out a......

Torontoist would like to self-select himself to be the Joan Rivers of the Untitled Art Awards. TUAA is arguably the city's best known visual arts award and judging from the nominees list a good chunk of the city's visual arts elite should be showing up. Last year's show had the Mayor eating an improvised meal to avant-garde jazz, acceptance speeches and beer, it was held at a brewery. What TUAA is missing is red......

The Toronto Film Festival is fully over and has been for nearly a week, with staff having made their way back from their temporary offices in hotels and malls, volunteers returned to their usual jobs or schools, and stars returning to… their lives of going to parties and hanging out with other stars (not a big change there, then). Now all the films are over and the red carpet has been rolled away, most......

So you're not TIFFing towards ecstasy, making like conspicuously consuming celebs on Bloor's Mink Mile who spend small fortunes in order to drown out the loneliness of the red carpet (boo hoo). The weekend's stuffed with fashiony goodness that's kinder to the civilian pocketbook, and much more satisfying. Today: Susan Harris Design, queen of urbane recycled clothing, is having an open house at her studio today, and inviting other designer to present their wares: jewellery......

TOist Ear EF sends us the following dispatch about Don McKellar's less than stellar ride - What Would Don Do? Can somebody ask Don McKellar if his new bike is working ? Canada's favourite actor screenwriter know it all, was riding a very rickety half flat squeeky theft proof two wheeler, pure brown junk - as he careened through the intersection he was overheard saying to his cycling companion, "are you sure you have the......

Between the screaming thirteen year olds and the creepy older men, Torontoist somehow managed to grab a front row ticket to the Live at Much House of Wax "special red carpet edition." Sure, watching from the comfort of your own couch and television is fun, but it's much more satisfying to be part of the live action. After all, where else can you be shoved by a Chanel-wearing fifteen-year-old because she needs to get her......

If you haven't seen the commercial where Paris promises it's gonna be HOTT in Toronto tonight....heads up on Queen Street tonight boys, cause Paris Hilton and Elisha Cuthbert are in town to promote their highly anticipated screaming-chick-horror-flick House of Wax. John Street's already blocked off, apparently they're expeciting a bit of a crowd? Yep, that's two "it" girls on one crowded little red carpet, for a "special" live event at 7pm on Much Music. Torontoist......
