ART: Toronto's Queen West neighbourhood has long been considered one of our city's most cherished cultural enclaves. Its motley mix of characters, from artists and musicians to local crazies, combined with blocks of tiny galleries and eclectic gathering places conjures an energy that is contagious to residents and visitors alike. Now in its seventh year, the Queen West Art Crawl (or QWAC) taps into this energy to celebrate the area's unique fusion of creativity and community. Stretching from Roncesvalles to Spadina (in addition to marquee events in Trinity Bellwoods Park and Parkdale Town Square), participants include local galleries, restaurants, boutiques, and studios. The crawl kicks off tonight at Gladstone, where the walls and rooms of the hotel will be devoted to art associated with the festival. And this year, the party coincides with the opening of the taboo-tackling Rated R Show in the hotel's Art Bar. Encouraging sixteen visionaries to banish boundaries and explore their concept of "rated R," the exhibit tantalizes with various interpretations of adult art—from the downright dirty to the borderline juvenile. ART: The ROM is launching a new series called "Out of the Vaults" today. The exhibition will display the ceremonial garb of Chief Sitting Bull, including his war shirt, moccasins, and iconic feathered war bonnet, all on display in the Daphne Cockwell Gallery of Canada. What's more, an original court gown of Marie Antoinette will be on display as part of the exhibition for two weeks starting October 11 in the Patricia Harris Gallery of Textiles and Costume, before it gets loaned to the palace of Versailles. The Royal Ontario Museum (100 Queen's Park), 10 a.m., $22 (included with admission).

Reminder: this weekend (September 14–16) is the Queen West Art Crawl, or QWAC ("quack"), where the streets and parks of trendy West Queen West become galleries.

Submission deadlines are quickly approaching for some of this year’s most exciting weekends of outdoor artfulness and it’s time to get those applications together.

If film buffs get the TIFF, art buffs get the Queen West Art Crawl, and hockey buffs get the NHL playoffs, then literary types get the IFOA. This year's fest packs in dozens of authors and into 10 days worth of readings, panel discussions, interviews and parties. Yes, once in a while literary types put down their books and drink.

This weekend is the Canadian Art Foundation’s 11th Annual Canadian Art Gallery Hop Toronto. This weekend is also Artscape’s 4th Annual Queen West Art Crawl. Two big art events this weekend? Holy Jesus! What to do?

The Queen West Art Crawl marks its third birthday this weekend. So much stuff, from open studios to the outdoor art show and sale to "HOUSE CALL: A multi-disciplinary Experiment Where Queen St. W. Invites You Home." Beyond that, Instant Coffee takes over the MOCCA courtyard, and the RBC painting comp hangs indoors.

Is there a word for fear of lines? queuphobia? Whatever. TIFF has nearly passed, and as the media environment clears of five-minute celebrity interviews and capsule reviews, a whole array of other cinematic choices emerge.
