Torontoist is ending the year by naming our Heroes and Villains of 2008--the people, places, and things that we've either fallen head over heels in love with or developed uncontrollable rage towards over the past twelve months, with one hero and one villain selected by each participating staff member. On Christmas Day: the heroes. On Boxing Day: the villains. And next week, cast your vote to determine the Superhero and Supervillain of the year.

In the United States, rising fuel costs have forced airline carriers like Delta and American Airlines to cut both routes and jobs—with executives happily playing the victim by reinforcing the myth of speculation causing higher oil prices. (Speculation actually decreases volatility and the blame for surging prices sits squarely on that boring old idea of supply and demand.) In Canada, two airlines will be cutting jobs: Jazz Air by 270 and its parent company Air Canada by 2,000.

WestJet and Porter Airlines both added fuel surcharges to their ticket prices, because it turns out jet fuel is getting more expensive what with, you know, oil prices and all. So obviously this means that you should plan your expensive, environmentally wasteful trip sooner rather than later, when all the gas runs out and the only airline left is the Gyro Captain from The Road Warrior.

As of Friday, it's no longer the Hummingbird Centre, but instead the Sony Centre. You know what? All performing arts venues should be renamed so that they sound like something you would find at your local mall. It gives the whole experience more delicious corporate flavour.

Study finds that Ontario children's group homes are like jails. Managers of group homes dismissed charges that their homes were Dickensian by pointing out that their children are not highly skilled pickpockets. Yet.

Nine months into their existence, Porter Airlines chugs along, still under the radar of most. As the Toronto Star recently reported, the young airline is still struggling to find a steady stream of regular business customers. With traffic on the 401 at an all-time high, getting to Pearson during rush hours can potentially take as long as a flight to Montreal. On a weekend getaway, the give-or-take ten hours spent traveling to La Belle Province and back are costly. And with flights available for not much more than a regular fare round-trip on VIA to Montreal, it made sense to give Porter a shot.

Reader Jonathan recently let us know about a trip he took to Ottawa and back via (cue dramatic music) Porter Airlines. That's right, the airline of the infamous island airport.

Another day, another mayoral debate, and Torontoist was liveblogging it from University of Toronto's Hart House (See the Star's non-liveblogging take, as well). Kevin Clark crashed the debate, Pitfield wants to drop the voting age to 16, and all of the candidates debating agreed that landed immigrants should be allowed to vote in municipal elections.

Watching the battle between the city and the Toronto Port Authority is like being stuck in a bad horror flick. Just when you think the stake has been driven into the necrotic heart of the Island Airport expansion plans, the undead issue rises from the grave to terrorize citizens yet again.

If it's an election year it must be time to discuss the future of Toronto City Centre Airport. But you can't do that unless someone wants to build a bridge or, say, start a new airline to fly out of there - enter Porter Airlines.
