Toronto had a violent weekend with nine people shot and four of them killed, including an 11-year-old boy at a birthday party. Two more people were stabbed. Cue relatives wailing, Police Chief Bill Blair saying "this is unacceptable," and headlines like "Saturday Night Bloodbath." We’ve seen all this before. Solutions, anyone?

Mayor David Miller doesn’t want to meet with him; neither does Police Chief Bill Blair. But that hasn’t stopped Lou Hoffer, the national director of the Guardian Angels of Canada, being named one of the 10 most important people in Toronto by Macleans. There’s no question that, for better or worse, he and the Angels have brought a discussion of law, order and the city’s fraying fabric to the fore.

It's been two days since the war on terror came to our quiet little corner of the world. Sort of. No bombs exploded, no one was shot and no one died.

The police made over 100 arrests and are expected to lay 1000 (nope, we didn't add an extra digit there) charges in their huge raid on the Jamestown Crew yesterday.

A dire situation dictates dire actions, not overblown reactions. Toronto City Hall, sadly, seems prone to the latter this month.

As many times as the Chief's 'work together' stock phrase can be reinterpreted, this year's Toronto Police Week 2005 is going for one message: Building Safer Communities.
