Torontoist has been saying for years that City Council provides better bang for your buck than any other piece of live entertainment in this city. At absolutely no cost (unless you count, you know, taxes), you can attend this extravaganza that combines the spectacle and epic scale of a mega-musical with the manic energy of a really good Fringe show. Each run lasts two consecutive days a month but is often held over to......

This Sunday is the third annual St. James Town Festival, which begins at 10 a.m. outside of the Wellesley Community Centre at the corner of Wellesley and Sherbourne. At least, it's supposed to. But festival organizers claim that an unexpected and hefty bill from the city has left the event in jeopardy. For those of you unfamiliar with St. James Town, it's home to approximately 19,000 people living in a four-block radius, and is Canada's......

City council says up to 2,500 tonnes of dog poop are deposited in park trash bins every year. This is problematic since our garbage dumps in Michigan refuse to take it. How cool would it be if you could design a Toronto city street from scratch, top to bottom? How wide would it be? How many lanes? Would it have a streetcar? A bike lane? Would the buildings along it be residential, retail, or mixed? Last Thursday night, a group of random citizens joined city councillor Pam McConnell and other TTC and city officials for an evening (hosted by the West Don Lands Committee and the......

On Yonge Street just north of Elm Street, in front of the store in which 15-year-old Jane Creba killed by an errant bullet, a group of about 200 gathered to mourn the deaths of all those killed by guns in 2005. There was a moment of silence before each candle was dedicated to a shooting victim; one candle for any one of the 52 victims. Organizer Himy Syed placed his candle down for Jane......

Last week, Dalton wouldn't call. And now, Toronto's Police Services Board says Milly can't have the say in the determination of the Police Chief that he'd so wanted to have. It's not news that MDM wanted a Chief who would dwell within city limits, but that might be the last of his airings on the matter. Chair Pam McConnell voted against letting him sit in on the interviews, but hopes he'll still have some role......

Imagine the life of a Toronto City Councilor - the jet setting, the screaming fans, the intense media scrutiny. Toronto City Councilor Paula Fletcher works under this pressure everyday. And, like all Toronto City Councilors, she must dress accordingly. To know more about Council fashion, follow roving Torontoist affiliate Terry Woo as he gets elbow-to-elbow with Royson James, Dave Miller, and Denzil Minnan-Wong last Thursday at City Hall. Torontoist is proud to present Terry's quick......
