On Tuesday, the second-place New Jersey Devils came to play their road game at the Air Canada Centre, clogging up the neutral zone and waiting for the Maple Leafs to make a mistake. Which might have worked, had they been able to take the lead. But the Leafs played patient, capitalized on the power play, and held on for a 2-1 win. It was only after the oft-maligned Nik Antropov scored the Leafs’ second goal that the Devils came to life. But all that matters is the Leafs got their 2 points in the standings and are now level with Carolina and the Montreal Canadiens for the final playoff spot with just nine games left in the regular season.

Liberals furious over Stephen Harper's suggestion that they care more about Taliban prisoners than Canadian troops. Stéphane Dion demanded an apology, which of course led Harper to then go to the "you don't support the troops enough" well again. Torontoist would like to thank Stephen Harper for confirming, once and for all, that he is a major-league douchebag.

Thousands of college and university students rally across Canada for lower tuition fees and greater education funding. FUN FACT:This is approximately the 17th or so national day of rallies for lower tuition fees and greater education that I have seen, and interestingly, tuition fees have never actually gone down during that time, but instead gone up steadily!

With the signing of AJ Burnett (pictured with Florida singer Brandy Rich) and BJ Ryan, the Toronto Blue Jays will pay $102 million to two pitchers who use letters as first names. The Toronto Film Festival is fully over and has been for nearly a week, with staff having made their way back from their temporary offices in hotels and malls, volunteers returned to their usual jobs or schools, and stars returning to… their lives of going to parties and hanging out with other stars (not a big change there, then). Now all the films are over and the red carpet has been rolled away, most of us are quite happy to forget about the festival for another year, and indeed, many of us got kind of tired of it by the end. So Torontoist is here to take a look at some reasons why we should still be in love with the Toronto Film Festival.

So Hollywood is worried. We're five weeks into the blockbuster season, and there's been nary a decent showing at the box office. Poor Orlando Bloom? Nope, poor audiences. Poor audiences paying good money for bad movies. Besides, if the poor, beleagured public decides to spend their leisure money elsewhere, maybe the studios will stop foisting crap upon us. Sadly, they couldn't work such a turn around in time for this weekend, where your BO offerings include both a crappy J Lo flick, and, for good measure, a crappy Will Ferrell flick.

The Blue Jays made good use of the longball in their regular season-opener Monday afternoon. Orlando Hudson, Vernon Wells and Eric Hinske all went yard in the team’s disposal of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The three homeruns accounted for all of the Jays scoring in the 5-2 victory. 2003 Cy-Young award winner Roy Halladay looked strong in the effort, surrendering just a pair of runs and striking out seven over his seven innings of work. Closer Miguel Batista got the job done, shutting the door to pick up the save. The two teams will go at it again at Tropicana Field tonight.

Although the Raptors are only 4.5 games out of the final playoff spot, and 6 games back of the division leading Boston Celtics, the hopes of a playoff birth should realistically be dropped.

The Raptors recorded just their second road win of the young season last night in a tough battle against conference favourite Kazaam and the Miami Heat. With Vinsanity hardly contributing with just five points on 2 for 9 shooting, the win was fueled by the return of Donyell Marshall who added sixteen points to the (almost) full team effort. Marshall’s return adds size inside along with gifted outside shooting. The Raps will to continue their claw back to a respectable road record when they take on the Orlando Magic tonight.
